GEAfter the Dakota War, Bounties for Dakota peoples scalps became popularized by Colonizers. Oscar Malmros, issued a general order for the establishment of a mounted corps of “volunteer scouts” to patrol from Sauk Centre to the northern edge of Sibley County. The scouts provided their own arms, equipment, and provisions, were each paid two dollars a day, and were offered an additional $25($810 today) for Dakota scalps. A reward of $75( $2,625.03 today) a scalp was offered to people not in military service; that amount was raised to $200 on September 22. Period newspapers described the taking of many scalps.~thelandbackbitch

CB“It’s a good day,” said Halfway River First Nation Chief Darlene Hunter.
Five First Nations in northeastern B.C., who signed a land treaty known as Treaty 8 in 1899, celebrated the culmination of decades of negotiations to have it honoured as it was agreed to more than 100 years ago.
Hunter recognized nation members who did not live to see the resolution over Treaty 8 negotiations with B.C. and Canada.
The province said that for more than 100 years, the First Nations were deprived of the use and benefit of thousands of acres of land owed to them under Treaty 8, while the resources on and under those lands were taken and developed by others.
As part of the agreements, B.C. will transfer Crown land back to the nations, while Canada will provide the First Nations compensation for losses and costs relating to the claims.
B.C. will make available 109,385 acres (443 square kilometres) to the nations and the Government of Canada will give $800 million to honour Treaty 8 as it was intended when it was signed.

ALMind-blowing archaeological breakthrough: An 11,000-year-old village — older than the Egyptian pyramids — has been uncovered near Sturgeon Lake First Nation along the North Saskatchewan River!
This isn’t just another hunting camp: Excavations reveal a sophisticated, permanent Indigenous settlement with ancient fire pits, intricate stone tools, and remains of the extinct Bison antiquus. A joint effort by the Âsowanânihk Council and researchers from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Calgary, the find proves early post-Ice Age communities were far more complex and settled than previously thought.
Most powerfully, it confirms long-held Cree oral traditions of the area as a major cultural and trade hub — turning legend into hard evidence and rewriting North American history. Chief Christine Longjohn calls it “truth, memory, and proof” of ancestral legacy.
With development threats looming, the Âsowanânihk Council is urgently calling for national protection to safeguard this irreplaceable global heritage site.

ALWe have 5 days to save this forest - in both the US & Canada, road paths on public land get aimed through big trees as part of logging projects for different reasons. In the U.S., it’s because the trees are subject to weaker protections as part of a “road building” project than they are as part of a logging project. In Canada, it’s because trees cut down as part of “road building” don’t have to be paid for. Slightly different reasons with the same result.
The forest in this video is in the traditional homelands of the Pacheedaht First Nation, unceded to the Canadian province of British Columbia, where 57% of the softwood lumber is exported here to the United States. Both our countries play a role in the fate of this forest, and BC just opened a comment period open to international participation until February 22, 2026.
