Does shaking your breasts help release more fat into your milk? 🥛👀 Let’s ask our Founder & Lactation Consultant Gabby 🍼 • • • Yes! But not in the way you think… 🤔 There are actually more effective techniques that support the release of more nutrient-dense milk because they improve how well milk is being moved and removed from the breast. Milk doesn’t switch from foremilk to hindmilk instantly. It’s a gradual transition that happens throughout a feed or pumping session. At the start, foremilk flows more easily and is naturally lower in fat. As milk removal continues, fat globules lining the alveoli and milk ducts begin to dislodge and mix into the milk. That’s when hindmilk is released, richer in fat and fat-soluble nutrients! 🥛✨ Which is why the key factor isn’t shaking, but how effectively milk is being removed. Techniques like breast compressions, hands-on pumping, or optimising latch help move milk from deeper ducts forward, supporting more thorough drainage. The better the milk removal, the more nutrient-dense the milk🤍 Credits to: fantajiwarudo on Tik Tok for her video! #legendairymilksg #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmama #milksupply

AI generated… but anatomically incorrect. This viral image of a “lactating breast” might look impressive, but it’s actually a great example of how misunderstood breastfeeding anatomy still is. The ducts aren’t giant milk reservoirs. The breast isn’t a hollow container that “stores” milk in big sacs. And milk doesn’t just sit behind the nipple waiting to be released. In reality, a lactating breast is made up of glandular tissue (alveoli) that continuously produce milk, tiny ducts that transport it, and a complex network of nerves and hormones that coordinate the entire process. Milk production is dynamic, responsive, and driven by supply and demand — not static storage. What’s most fascinating? The fact that this image went viral tells us that many people — even parents — haven’t been taught the basic anatomy of how breastfeeding actually works. And that’s not a failure of families… it’s a gap in education. Understanding how your breasts make and move milk can completely change how you approach: • Low supply concerns • Cluster feeding • Pumping • Engorgement • “Empty” breasts • Infant fussiness at the breast Knowledge builds confidence. Confidence supports breastfeeding. If you’d love to better understand how your body works — whether you’re pregnant, newly postpartum, or months into feeding — book an appointment at West Coast Lactation via www.westcoastlactation.com.au 🤍 Let’s replace misinformation with evidence-based support. #westcoastlactation #perthmumsandbubs #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeedingjourney #perthsmallbusiness

Clogged ducts aren’t actually “clogs” — they’re areas of inflammation in the breast. That’s why aggressive massage and constant heat can sometimes make things worse. Instead, think: reduce inflammation, keep milk moving normally, and protect the tissue. What helps: • Continue feeding or pumping as usual • Gentle breast movement (no deep tissue massage) • Cold compress between feeds • Anti-inflammatory medication if approved by your provider Call your provider if you develop fever, flu-like symptoms, or worsening redness and pain. Save this for later or share with a parent who needs it! #Breastfeeding #cloggedduct #lactationconsultant

Breastfeeding concerns are one of the most common reasons new mothers seek help. In my 27+ years of clinical practice, most breastfeeding challenges are related to latch and milk transfer rather than milk production itself. Early lactation assessment can prevent: • unnecessary supplementation • maternal distress • early breastfeeding discontinuation This post is intended as a reference for new mothers and healthcare colleagues. Save for future reference. #breastfeedingsupport #obgyn #ibclc #lowmilksupply #cloggedmilkducts

A ‘Clicking’ sound is simply a sign of a break in the seal, or a seal never established. Clicking means there is no vacuum. And that can be at the breast or bottle. It does not automatically mean that there is anatomy that needs to be revised. We must always, always deeply understand the physiology, anatomy, biology and in lactation WE MUST UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS before we rush to diagnose anything. Especially when it comes to surgical interventions like a frenotomy - which literally means cutting the frenulum. And before the emotive comments come - I understand the feeling if you had one revised due to clicking but here we are talking about the science. This is not personal - it is imparting science. #breastfeeding #tonguetie #ibclc #clicking #baby

Engorged breasts in the first week or so after birth can be a right menace (for some a fascinating experience about how someone else’s breasts might look on your body). Sometimes those firm, swollen breasts can make attachment hard/painful/frustrating - so here is a trick you can try to make breastfeeding a bit easier (and more comfy). As a midwife and lactation professional, I support tools used appropriately and with evidence. But breastfeeding works on supply and demand. Milk production responds to effective removal, not digital measurement. We already have reliable clinical indicators of adequate intake. Parents need reassurance rooted in physiology, not fear-based marketing. If you’re worried about supply, seek skilled breastfeeding support before reaching for technology. #EvidenceBasedCare #BreastfeedingEducation #MidwifeLedCare #IBCLC #LactationConsultant

Flower City Lactation Tip of the Week: Engorgement Edition Breasts feeling rock-hard and uncomfortable? Engorgement happens when milk builds up faster than it’s removed. ✨ Try this: • Ice packs (5-10 min) between feeds to reduce swelling • Reclined breast massage (lean back and gently massage AWAY from the nipple) to help milk flow without increasing swelling • Feed or pump often—milk removal is still key Think of it as “calm the swelling, then move the milk.” Your boobs will thank you 😌 #LactationTips #postpartumsupport #BreastfeedingSupport #engorgementrelief

Breastmilk is nature’s first vaccine, providing babies with essential nutrients and antibodies that protect them from infections and support healthy growth. It also strengthens the bond between mother and baby while promoting optimal brain development. If you’re experiencing latching difficulties, try adjusting your baby’s position, ensuring their mouth covers more of the areola, and seek guidance from a skilled birth attendant or lactation consultant. With patience, support, and practice, most breastfeeding challenges can be overcome. #healthzoneng #breastfeedingtips #overcominglatchingdifficulties #breastmilksupply
