Now education privilege has gotten me to a lot of spaces and I know and still talk to this day in how it has benefitted me in many spaces. But I wanted to take a moment to share how much my work has been devalued specifically in the environmental movement when my work and lived experiences have been denounced to a sheer name of “influencer”. Now I’m not saying that the term influencer is negative but it does strike me odd when my white counter parts who have barely entered the movement or did not even major in the field are seen as experts and my knowledge or thought processes is always questioned. That’s why sometimes I feel defeated in this space of having to prove myself with individuals. I’ve talked to a lot of friends before that are BIPOC and we’ve collectively shared how our intentions, acts, and intelligence are constantly questioned from academic institutions, non profits, and corporations. I don’t seek to match at any level but simply to continue existing in this space as a grassroots extension for people wanting to become educated. It’s frustrating and sad at times because I believe I have to walk in egg shells with people and have remembered to myself to walk away from environments that no longer serve me and that’s been happening recently within certain environmental spaces. When it comes to pretty privilege I have to also acknowledge that this exists and also I have benefited being centered in spaces that I don’t often think is talked about in movement spaces. It’s not to point fingers but just to be honest that these both privileges co exist and that I also too have a responsibility to talk about it and push myself deeper to think about actions and commitments.
