A star's explosive death in a supernova left behind this dreamy cosmic scene. Known as N103B, this supernova occurred in a neighboring galaxy to our Milky Way, known as the Large Magellanic Cloud. Because of its relative proximity – in cosmic terms, at least – astronomers can observe this supernova remnant in remarkable detail. The scarlet filaments near the top of the image are the "shock fronts" of the supernova. They show that this explosion isn't expanding as a sphere anymore, but rather as an elliptical. ⚠️Info: Artemis II launched on April 1, 2026, carrying four astronauts aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft on a mission to fly around the Moon. The launch itself went smoothly, with the Space Launch System performing as expected and successfully placing Orion into orbit. Early mission phases, including key trajectory and system checks, were completed without major issues, confirming that critical systems are working reliably. Some minor problems did occur. Shortly after launch, there was a brief communication dropout between Orion and mission control, and a small malfunction in the spacecraft’s toilet system, which the crew managed to fix. Overall, the mission is progressing as planned, with no serious technical failures so far. Comment 🙌 if you read the caption! Galaxies: Building Blocks of the Universe This montage highlights the main galaxy types in Edwin Hubble’s 1926 tuning-fork classification: • Ellipticals — smooth, featureless systems dominated by old stars • Spirals — rotating disks with winding arms and active star formation • Lenticulars (S0) — transitional galaxies bridging ellipticals and spirals • Irregulars — chaotic structures rich in star-forming regions These forms reveal billions of years of cosmic evolution shaped by gravity, mergers, and gas dynamics. Wood is rare in the universe because it requires specific conditions to form, involving life, liquid water, moderate temperatures, and the right chemistry. Trees and plants produce wood through photosynthesis, using energy from stars, water, CO2, and nutrients. Given these constraints, wood's unlikely to form naturally elsewhere in the universe. Most "wood" in space would likely be fragments or remnants, like meteorites containing organic compounds. Earth's unique conditions and life make it an exceptional place for wood to form and thrive 🌎.

NGC 274 🤝 NGC 275 These two galaxies come together to form an interacting pair called Arp 140. The pair is made up of two very different galaxy types: the sparkling blue galaxy (NGC 275) is a barred spiral galaxy, which has a bar of stars that runs through the central bulge of the galaxy. The other galaxy (NGC 274) is classified as a lenticular. This galactic type gets its name from the edge-on appearance that resembles a disk. Lenticular galaxies have large central bulges and flattened disk-like spirals, but no spiral arms. They don’t have much gas and dust, and are made up primarily of old stars. How many times has the Earth gone around our Milky Way Galaxy? The earth is the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Now the Earth orbits the sun, so where the sun goes, we go as do the rest of the planets. The sun is orbiting the Milky Way at around an average velocity above a half million miles per hour. (514,495 per hour, 828,000 km/hr) NASA says it takes 230 million years to make one complete orbit around the galaxy. Given that the sun is 4.6 years old, the sun has been in existence, it’s made a trip around the Milky Way 20 times. A note for each galaxy 🌌 This sonification strikes a chord every time a galaxy emits light captured in this Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. The farther away the galaxy, the longer it takes for light to travel before reaching Hubble. Over the course of a minute, we hear back nearly 13 billion years to the farthest galaxy Hubble captured in this photo. The telescope’s design and technology have allowed researchers to make landmark discoveries, including the atmospheric composition of planets around other stars, dark energy, and more. Journey through Caldwell 51, a faint galaxy about 2.3 million light-years away. Hubble captured ultraviolet, infrared, and visible-light observations of C51, in order to learn more about its chemical composition. Since most elements in the universe are formed by stars and distributed into their galaxy when the stars die, this information can help researchers learn more about the evolution of the galaxy and its star formation history.
