Pleasure is a terrible teacher: it rewards the impulse, not the person you’re trying to become. Most desires are just distractions wearing a goal’s clothes. If you want real progress, stop negotiating with urges and start protecting your future self. Notice the pull, breathe through it, and act by values—train, build, learn, serve. Freedom isn’t getting everything you crave; it’s needing less to stay grounded. Here’s the debate: Is happiness built by satisfying desires, or by outgrowing them? Comment your take, save this for the days your willpower wobbles, and tag someone who’s ready to choose discipline over impulse. Struggling With Impulsivity or ADHD? Try This Fun Brain Game! 🧠🍭🧼 If your child has ADHD or struggles with impulse control, this simple game could help activate the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for attention, decision-making, and inhibition. Using just a lollipop and a bar of soap, this fun challenge strengthens self-regulation and cognitive flexibility. How to Play the Lick & Smell Game:
1️⃣ Hold a lollipop and bar of soap.
2️⃣ One tap = lick the lollipop 🍭
3️⃣ Two taps = smell the soap 🧼
4️⃣ Keep the taps random so they can’t predict what’s next! 👉 If they mess up… they might lick the soap (oops!) — great built-in consequence for impulsivity 😬 🎮 Ready for Level Up? Try These Variations:
🔁 Double tap = do the opposite
🗣️ “Do what I say” vs. “Do the opposite of what I say”
These versions boost auditory processing, attention switching, and executive function! 💬 Want tailored strategies to support your child’s brain development? Impulse control is one of the most important skills to teach your puppy, and trust me, sometimes it’s not as easy as it looks! In today’s video, we’re working on the Open-Close Palm exercise, which helps my pup learn how to resist the urge to grab or jump. It’s all about teaching patience and focus, even when there’s a treat right in front of them. 🐾🍪 Here’s how it works: I hold my hand open with a treat inside and wait for him to stay calm. When he doesn’t rush to take the treat (and keeps his paws and mouth to himself), I’ll give him the reward! This helps him learn that waiting pays off, and it builds impulse control that will transfer to real-life situations, like not grabbing food off the counter or jumping up on guests. It’s all about consistency and small steps! Training a puppy takes patience (for both of us 😂), but it’s SO rewarding to see them start understanding how to control their impulses and focus on the task at hand. It’s a work in progress, but I’m proud of how far we’ve come! ✋🐕 #puppysofinstagram #puppytraining #dogtraining #impulsecontrol #dogtrainingtips #novascotiaducktollingretriever #tollersofinsta #fyp #cutepuppy

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG “LEAVE IT” 🐶 Save this video for future reference! ✨ Follow @ayce.and.aria for more fun training tutorials! 💛🐶 Teaching your dog “Leave It” is one of the most important skills for safety and impulse control. It helps your dog think before acting, ignore things they shouldn’t have, and look to you for guidance in distracting situations. This command builds focus, self-control, and a stronger bond between you and your dog. Steps: 1. Grab your dog’s favorite high-value treats. A hack here is to use your dog’s high-value meals to train to avoid extra calories from treats. 2. Hold a treat in each hand and close your fist before your dog grabs it. Wait until your dog stops sniffing or loses interest, then reward from the other hand. 3. Repeat with your hand open — reward when your dog leaves it and looks at you. 4. Place the treat on the floor, closer to you at first. Ask to “leave it” and reward eye contact. Gradually move the treat closer to your dog. 5. Then toss the treat and say “leave it.” Reward generously for success. 6. Add challenges — use more treats or practice while you’re standing farther away. 🤔🤔What makes dogs stop counter surfing?? ➡️Not removing temptation. Teaching impulse control through waiting for permission. 👉Management has it’s place on things you can’t really control, but impulse control to not jump on the counter is a behavior that you can train. ✅You just have to show them your expectations and practice. 👉👉How I actually taught this: In order for the dog to understand I had to use something that had huge value to him, tennis balls. I started with them further back on the counter. Had him wait near the counter. If he did not jump up I marked it with a “yes” and rewarded at the floor. It took him all of about 3 minutes to understand what I wanted and I never gave one cue at all. Just my reward placement. ➡️No “leave it” cue. No negative tone. Just: wait, get rewarded at the floor. ✅He learned: staying calm = reward comes to me at the floor. Going for the item = nothing. ✅The progression: Eventually I moved balls right to the counter edge. Then onto the floor directly in front of him. He didn’t touch them. Waited for permission instead. ✅ I built the understanding that the reward comes from ME at floor level, not from taking what’s in front of him. ✅The key difference: I never told him what NOT to do. I taught him what TO do: wait, reward comes to you. ✅Positive teaching without negative cues. He chose impulse control because that’s where the reward pattern was. 👉What this prevents: Stolen food. Dangerous items ingested. Constant management. You can leave things out without worry. ➡️Counter surfing stops when waiting for permission is more rewarding than opportunistic grabbing. ✅ Puppy-Adolescent-Breeder/Trainer Courses online at empoweredpuppyschool.com #puppytraining #countersurfing #impulsecontrol #dogtraining #puppytrainingtips #goldenretrieverpuppy #labradorpuppy #waitforpermission #positivedogtraining #empoweredpuppyprogram

You aren’t teaching impulse control… and that’s why your dog: • Bolts through doors • Jumps on guests • Snatches food off the counter • Ignores you when they’re excited Impulse control isn’t automatic — it’s a skillset. Sadly, it’s often overlooked, and too many dogs end up in shelters or rehomed because no one helped them develop it. Hana, the sweetest pit bull in the world, is here working on impulse control and basic manners. How to start: • Teach and load your markers — continuation (duration), terminal (release), and a clear no-reward marker like “Nope” or “Uh-oh.” • Wait at thresholds. • Wait before meals. • Hold positions until released. The more your dog learns to pause before they act, the more freedom they can earn. It’s a shift of how they think…And that’s what we’re here for. #dogtrainingtips | #impulsecontrol | #dogbehavior #caninelifestyle | #balancedtraining | #togetherdogco #dogparents | #dogmanners | #dogobediencetraining

👉Most people teach wait in calm, controlled environments. ✅But real life isn’t calm. And if you only train in quiet moments, it doesn’t transfer when their brain wants to GO. ➡️➡️Watch what happens: First tries, they run. That’s normal. Their instinct says chase the movement. ✅But I’m not avoiding the excitement. I’m using it. ➡️How this works: Put them on place by the door. Open it slowly. If they move, close it and redirect back. If they wait, reward. At first, no verbal cue - just mark when they choose to wait. Once they succeed a few times, add the cue: “waiting.” Gradually open the door wider while they maintain the wait. 👉👉Why this works: The opening door creates the exact impulse I want to control. Their brain says GO. When they pause anyway, that’s real impulse control. The door becomes their visual cue to think instead of react. Training in calm doesn’t build the skill they need. You train when their brain most wants to act. ✅✅Last clip: All four at 8 weeks old. Door wide open. All waiting. Even when I reward the others. The door teaches them. Visual cues make sense to puppies in ways commands don’t. ✅Use the excitement. Don’t avoid it. Save this 👆 ✅ Getting a puppy? Were you ever told "you just don't know when to stop!" As a child?... A game goes wrong and someone gets hurt. The fun got too big and something got broken! . I was told this all the time 🙈🥴 . From very early on I noticed my children just didn't have the mechanism built inside them that gave them the messages and clues that it was time to stop. They didn't notice their own bodies getting rougher. They didn't notice the environment struggling to contain them. They didn't notice the other people's reactions. They carried on, on a quest for the bigger and the wooshier at any cost. . So I spoke to them about the science of fun. We spoke about it in a few different ways, but this visual was great! We noticed that as our happiness cup gets fuller and fuller it can accidentally overflow and that leads to upset. . This visual gave me a point of reference. I could say things like "I think our cups going to overflow if we don't get steady" or "oh dear we didn't quite manage to stop before things splashed everywhere"... Rather than "you don't know when to stop". Connection and compassion over shame and correction. . I think for Neurodivergent children the odds are stacked against them in terms of getting this part of play and fun just right. Their body signals work differently, their social awareness works differently, their impulse control works differently and their drive for dopamine works differently. . Have a good at using this visual as a talking point, to help make it more concrete and real 💓 what do you think?...
