Before that, the land was under Ottoman rule and later the British Mandate, historically known as Palestine. Generations of Palestinians lived on that land long before 1948, with deep roots, homes, culture and identity tied to it.
More importantly, this visit comes at a time when Gaza has faced unimaginable devastation over the past two years. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble, and humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of catastrophic conditions. Across the world, many human rights groups, legal scholars and activists have described the scale of destruction and civilian deaths as genocidal in nature, and proceedings at international courts are ongoing.
Visiting Israel amid such suffering, without visibly and forcefully addressing the humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, is seen by many as unacceptable. Leadership is not only about strategic alliances. It is also about standing on the right side of history.
