1. If you’re looking for a restroom, go to a pachinko parlor instead of a convenience store. In cities like Osaka and Tokyo, busy areas usually don’t have public restrooms, so go to a pachinko parlor instead. Pachinko is a Japanese slot-machine arcade, and they always have restrooms! ⸻ 2. Trains are cheaper than taking a taxi. Using taxis isn’t cheap, and in Japan you can reach most places by train — so keep that in mind! ⸻ 3. For Shinkansen tickets, use Smart EX. When buying Shinkansen (bullet train) tickets, skip the counter and use Smart EX instead. It’s much more convenient and saves you travel time! OBON (お盆) | Mid-August (Aug 13–16) A traditional Buddhist period when people return to their hometowns to honor ancestors. ➡️ Trains, highways & cities get extremely busy ➡️ Travel between cities is difficult ➡️ It’s a family time, not a tourist event 🍁 SILVER WEEK | Mid-September (Sep 19–23) A rare week when national holidays align. ➡️ Domestic travel spikes ➡️ Hotels & trains book out fast ➡️ Like a mini Golden Week 🎍 NEW YEAR (お正月) | Dec 29 – Jan 3 Japan’s most important holiday of the year. ➡️ Families stay home ➡️ Many shops & restaurants close ➡️ Shrines & temples are insanely crowded ➡️ Think Christmas + New Year combined 🌸 GOLDEN WEEK | Late April – Early May Several national holidays close together. ➡️ Japanese people take time off work ➡️ Families travel inside Japan ➡️ Trains, hotels & tourist spots are packed ❗ Why this matters for travelers ❌ More expensive ❌ More crowded ❌ Less flexibility Japan is incredible but when you go matters a lot. There are certain periods where traveling in Japan can feel overwhelming, especially if: • it’s your first time in Japan • you’re hoping for a relaxed, slow trip • you don’t enjoy crowds, long lines, or packed trains During these times, hotels get expensive, popular spots are overcrowded, and even simple things like taking the train or eating out can feel stressful. That said , it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t travel ✨ It just means you should go knowing what to expect and plan a bit differently. If you’re flexible with dates, avoiding these periods can completely change your experience: less stress, fewer crowds, and a much more enjoyable trip 🤍 Save this if you’re planning a Japan trip and follow for more real, honest Japan tips 🇯🇵✈️ 👉 You can still travel during these times just go prepared. ✈️ SEND to someone who needs this 🍜🤤 follow @amanda.exploring for more travel inspo! Ichiran Ramen is world-famous and doesn’t really need an introduction…but does it really live up to the hype?! Known for their mouth watering tonkotsu ramen, I think visiting Ichiran is a must on your next Japan trip. I mean, what’s not to like?? 1️⃣ You first order on the machine when you walk in and can then customize your bowl exactly how you want on paper when you order. You decide the strength of flavor, broth richness, how much garlic you want, the spiciness, etc. Pro tip: you can order extra eggs, pork, and even noodles if you have leftover broth and are still hungry! 2️⃣ The atmosphere inside is so fun & unique. You’re treated to your own little stall where you’ll sit and eat behind a bamboo curtain. There is little interaction speaking with staff but there are several “help” wooden cards you can present if you need assistance. 3️⃣ Ichiran is open super late and some locations are even 24/7! Jet lagged and hungry in the middle of the night? Ichiran is open 🤣 Pro tip: the biggest issue you’ll face coming here is avoiding a loooong wait! My best tip is to go off the main, busy streets. In Shinjuku, we passed by a location that had a 2 hour wait. I pulled up google maps and found a location just a 15 minute walk away where we waited for just 5 minutes. Eating at off peak times helps as well. Do you think Ichiran is worth the hype? Agree with me or disagree? Let me know👇 Have dreams of visiting Japan? ✈️ send to someone you want to go to Japan with! Follow @amanda.exploring for all the Japan tips you’ll ever need! Viral Japan restaurants: worth the hype?! Yes or no…⬇️ 1️⃣ Udon Shin 🍜 most viral for: carbonara udon - The meal itself was a 8/10 for us but overall experience would lower that to a The udon itself is really bouncy & light and with perfect texture. The carbonara aspect was unique but we’d probably try the regular udon with broth next time. However, the wait time is very deceiving—we went early at around 4pm and still had a 2 hour wait. You get a text after one hour and then order in line which kind of locks you in & makes you feel like you’ll order soon…nope, it was another hour. My advice: get a ticket right when they open or get udon somewhere else 😜 overhyped. 2️⃣ Gyukatsu Motomura 🥩 most viral for: wagyu steak - This was a 8/10 for us. The entire experience was really fun! You get a ton of food for a decent price & the steak is super juicy & melts in your mouth. Plus, you can cook it exactly how you’d like! The staff were so friendly & helpful. The wait times can get long at peak meal times. My advice: check a location off the beaten path and eat between peak times (late lunch, early dinner). appropriately hyped. 3️⃣ Ichiran 🍜 most viral for: tonkotsu ramen - this was a 10/10 for us. To me, Ichiran is the perfect example of “it’s popular for a reason” - this ramen is SO delicious. You can customize your bowl exactly how you want & it’s also a cool experience. The bowl of ramen is steaming hot, with juicy pork & perfectly cooked eggs. There are locations all over and the wait times can get long. My advice: look for ones off the main streets for less of a wait. appropriately hyped. Do you agree with me or disagree?
