Watching Short Circuit's Johnny 5 absorb pratfalls and pie-in-the-face cartoons should've been charming nostalgia fuel, but every time he watches slapstick on screen we're left wondering whether we've accidentally built a robot that can humiliate as it kills. In a movie about a sentient robot learning about the world, Short Circuit promised us wonder and wide-eyed curiosity, not existential dread about a bot that hones its "input" from watching clowns.
It's nostalgia meets absurdity as we ask the hard questions: is this Johnny 5's first step toward world domination via banana peels or just the worst babysitter ever?

Short Circuit is an interesting example of the kinds of magical thinking that people get into when they think about artificial intelligence, says AI researcher, Beth Singler.
In the movie, lightning strikes a war bot called Johnny Five, making it conscious with his own personality, desires and wants. He escapes and goes on a journey of discovery, obsessively absorbing knowledge. Which, in some ways, is similar to how AI works today with large language models. But there's a darker side: the idea that war robots could develop a level of AI-driven autonomy.
