More than twenty-five years ago, a word found its truest and deepest definition in a book: Project for Prada Part I, dedicated to the Epicenters by Rem Koolhaas, and this definition recently came back to me. What is luxury? It is something deeper. It was also explained by Mrs. Prada in a 2021 video addressed to the shareholders of Prada Group. I believe her words may be the simplest way to define the products created by the company and the imaginaries those products generate. Luxury, therefore, is something that has a soul. “I like great stuff, I like incredible quality, I like all the content of this luxury world,” said Mrs. Prada in that video. Products, actions, spaces, ideas become luxury when they have a soul. And the soul is the most precious thing. For this reason, luxury is rough. It is rough because it represents a soul, an idea, something different. As that book states: “If everywhere is smooth, art becomes that which maintains a quality of roughness. Common is smooth, unique is rough. Recorded is smooth, live is rough. Commercial is smooth, art is rough. Typical is smooth, invention is rough. In this future, luxury must be rough.” Precisely for this reason, luxury is rough, and I think that any action taken by a company of this kind becomes “rough” because it contains a soul. #Prada #MiucciaPrada
