# Understanding Grief as a Pathway to Healing Trauma Grief is a natural and powerful emotional response to loss, and it can serve as a significant component in the healing process of trauma. Grieving allows individuals to process their emotions, come to terms with their experiences, and ultimately find a sense of peace and acceptance. Here, we explore how grief can aid in healing trauma and provide suggestions for navigating this complex journey. ## The Connection Between Grief and Trauma Trauma often involves a profound sense of loss—whether it's the loss of safety, trust, or a former way of life. This loss can trigger a grief response that is necessary for healing. Understanding the connection between grief and trauma can empower individuals to embrace their emotions and work through their experiences constructively. ## The Five Stages of Grief in Trauma Healing The five stages of grief, as outlined by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, provide a framework for understanding the grief process in the context of trauma: 1. **Denial**: This stage involves disbelief and shock. In trauma, denial can serve as a protective mechanism to prevent being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the event. 2. **Anger**: Anger may surface as a response to the perceived injustice or senselessness of the trauma. It is important to acknowledge and express this anger in healthy ways. 3. **Bargaining**: This stage is characterized by attempts to regain control or prevent further pain. Individuals may dwell on "what if" scenarios or make deals in their minds. 4. **Depression**: A deep sadness or hopelessness can set in as the reality of the trauma becomes clearer. This stage requires compassion and support from oneself and others. 5. **Acceptance**: Acceptance does not mean forgetting or minimizing the trauma. Instead, it involves integrating the experience into one's life and finding a way to move forward. ## Strategies for Navigating Grief in Trauma Healing - **Allow Yourself to Feel**: Suppressing emotions can hinder the heal#GriefHealing #TraumaRecovery #EmotionalHealing #HealingJourney #MentalHealthAwareness #GriefSupport #TraumaInformed #FiveStagesOfGrief #AcceptanceAndHe

In our first video about Navigating Grief, we discussed about grief being a deeply personal journey, where allowing yourself to sit with the feelings of loss helps you honour your nervous system that has endured the impact. But how does grieving look like? Do we always allow ourselves to grieve in a way that truly aligns with us and our body’s needs? Grieving can look like silence; like shutting yourself in a box and not stepping out despite you wanting to. But grieving is also allowed to look like music, which captures the rhythm of grief that comes in waves; it’s allowed to look like breathing and movement which creates space within you in a mindful embodied way; it’s allowed to look like colours you choose to pour out on your pallet as you begin to pour your heart out on a canvas; like the comforting smell of food which reminds you of home when you cook; like the tears you shed amidst your loved ones… it’s allowed. YOU are allowed. References: Gutiérrez, I. T., Menendez, D., Jiang, M. J., Hernandez, I. G., Miller, P., & Rosengren, K. S. (2019). Embracing Death: Mexican parent and child perspectives on death. In Episode 3 of the Prevent the Preventable podcast, we hear a powerful story of sudden loss, the shocking words “prepare yourself for a catastrophic event,” and the devastating reality of navigating grief without a will in place. This episode shines a light on: - The emotional and legal challenges families face after a brain haemorrhage - Why not having a will makes everything more complicated in the eyes of the law - Supporting children through grief while trying to manage the practical aftermath It’s a sobering reminder that while we can’t control when tragedy strikes, we can take steps to prepare and protect the people we love most. 1️⃣ You can finally talk about the person you lost without completely falling apart. In the beginning it was SO raw, just hearing their name would make you cry. Now you might share a story, laugh about a memory, or say their name with love instead of only pain. That’s healing. 2️⃣ You’re slowly getting some energy back & the heaviness starts to lift a little. Getting out of bed, cooking for yourself, doing day-to-day things doesn’t feel quite as impossible anymore. 3️⃣ You’re allowing yourself to feel happy again and the guilt isn’t as predominant. You realise joy doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten them. It just means your heart is learning to hold BOTH grief and happiness. 4️⃣ You’re connecting with people again. At first you probably wanted to hide away or felt like you’d “bring the mood down.” But now you’re saying yes to being around those who love you. You’re letting support in & that’s a huge part of your healing. 5️⃣ You’re starting to think about the future. Even small things like planning a walk with a friend, looking at holidays, or exploring what brings you peace again. These are signs you’re gently reconnecting with YOU. 6️⃣ You’ve found some comfort in little routines…your morning coffee, a favourite book, a weekend dinner with a friend. These small moments give structure, meaning, and a sense of safety again after the initial shock of grief. 7️⃣ You’re being kinder to yourself. The “what ifs” and “should haves” don’t have the same power. You trust yourself more, knowing grief has no timeline, and that it’s okay to feel both sadness and joy at the same time. If you’re not quite there yet & need some extra support (especially with Christmas coming up)… 👉🏽 I’ve got 4 spots left for my online grief group. It’s 10 weeks, small group (8–10 people), £20/€25 a session. UK & Ireland only. Comment or DM “GROUP” if you’d like to join. 👉🏽 I’ve also created my Navigating Grief During the Winter Months webinar… it’s 50 mins, £25.
