The provided image is a color-coded infographic titled "How long does it take to learn the official language of European countries?" which visualizes the relative difficulty of European languages for native English speakers. This map is likely based on data from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), which categorizes languages by the number of weeks required to reach "Professional Working Proficiency." The data assumes an intensive study environment of roughly 25 hours per week. The map categorizes difficulty into five tiers: Green (12 Weeks): Representing English-speaking regions (UK and Ireland), suggesting these are the baseline or easiest "transitions." Blue (24 Weeks): Covers Romance languages like French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, as well as Scandinavian languages like Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish. These share significant vocabulary or grammatical structures with English. Orange (30 Weeks): Specifically highlights German, which is more complex than its Germanic cousins due to its case system and word order. Red (44 Weeks): Encompasses most of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, including Russian, Polish, and Greek. These languages often feature entirely different alphabets or highly complex grammar. Black ("Good Luck"): Reserved for Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian. These are Uralic languages, not Indo-European, meaning they share virtually no common roots with English, making them notoriously difficult to master. While the map simplifies the process, it highlights the linguistic diversity of the continent and the steep learning curve for non-Indo-European tongues. Would you like me to find some specific resources or tips for learning one of the languages in the "Good Luck" category?

Learning Norwegian prepositions can feel surprisingly tricky, especially when two tiny words seem interchangeable but completely change the meaning of a sentence. “I” and “på” are perfect examples of this. They are both common, both short, and both often translate to English as in, on, or at — yet they describe entirely different spatial ideas. Think of “i” as stepping inside something. You are surrounded by walls, borders, or invisible limits. A house, a city, a country, even a box — if you are mentally or physically “within” it, “i” is usually your best friend. It gives a sense of enclosure, like being held by the space around you. On the other hand, “på” is about contact or position. You are on a surface, at a location, attending an institution, or present at an event. It is less about being enclosed and more about being placed or situated. School, work, the table, a concert — these are points or platforms rather than containers. For English speakers, the confusion often comes from trying to map three English prepositions (in / on / at) onto just two Norwegian ones. Instead of translating word-for-word, it helps to visualize the scene. Ask yourself: Am I inside something, or am I on / at something? That mental picture is usually more reliable than memorizing lists. Mastering small distinctions like this builds real fluency. These tiny words appear everywhere in everyday conversation, so once they click, your Norwegian suddenly sounds more natural and confident. Language learning is not only about vocabulary — it is about perspective, and sometimes a single letter changes the entire viewpoint of a sentence. #norsklæring #norskgrammatikk #lærnorsk #språktips #norskhverdag
