Both of our boys have PDA, and if you’ve ever tried to communicate with someone who has Pathological Demand Avoidance, you’ll know that the usual parenting advice simply doesn’t work. PDA brains experience everyday demands as pressure - and pressure triggers anxiety, overwhelm, and shutdowns. n this video I’m snaring the simple communication shifts thaf make a huge meone 9,902 542 calm when their/nervous system goes into defence mode. PDA meltdowns aren’t tantrums or bad behaviour - they’re nervous system emergencies. De-escalation isn’t about control or punishment, it’s about safety, autonomy and helping your child come back into regulation. These are the strategies that actually help when everything feels out of control. #pdaparenting #neurodivergentkids #sendparenting #askellie #pda

If school avoidance is already showing, pause before you push. I didn’t know this at first. I thought easing in meant encouragement. Encouragement turned into pressure faster than I realised. What I was seeing wasn’t refusal — it was a nervous system already in threat mode. For our family, this became EBSA — emotionally based school avoidance. And the more we tried to force attendance, the louder the distress became. Slowing down wasn’t giving up. It was listening beneath the behaviour. It was choosing regulation over compliance — and safety over short-term fixes. Early support matters. Because when anxiety is ignored, it doesn’t disappear. It escalates. If this is your first week back and your gut is already whispering something isn’t right — trust it. You’re not overreacting. You’re responding. Free EBSA support is linked on my website if you need it, just drop the word EBSA below 👇 #pdaparenting #pda #ebsa #autism

Rage in PDA parenting is deeply misunderstood. It’s not because you’re unsafe. It’s not because you’re failing. And it’s not because you don’t love your child. Most often, it’s defensive fight energy — responding to feeling controlled, trapped, or powerless… sometimes layered on top of old wounds where you weren’t allowed needs or boundaries. Rage is your nervous system trying to restore agency. When you learn how to work with that energy — instead of blocking it or shaming it — something shifts. 👇 Comment AGENCY... ... to learn how to complete fight energy safely, set boundaries in small ways, and keep supporting your PDA child without burning out. . . . . . . . #pdaparenting #parentrage #nervoussystemregulation #traumainformedparenting #parentagency

Matching emojis to coloured boxes can look like emotional education but Zones of Regulation teaches a script rather than genuine communication. Children learn how to perform emotions for adults instead of being supported to understand and communicate their internal experience. 🧠 Zones is a top down approach It tells the child what emotions should look like It teaches a fixed language system It rewards correct matching rather than lived understanding It does not listen to the individual 🎭 When emotional expression becomes a script the child learns performance not connection Their feelings get filtered through expectations Through adult interpretation Through subconscious bias and what adults think emotions should be 🧠 PDA profiles need autonomy and low demand dialogue They need space to communicate emotion without being instructed They need support that does not depend on vocabulary or compliance They need approaches that remove pressure and avoid bias That is why I developed the Emotion Communication Map. It removes performance pressure and takes vocabulary out of the starting point. It opens indirect child led reflection and supports genuine self understanding. This has created meaningful advocacy and emotional awareness for many PDA profiles in my practice over the last five years. 🎓 If you want to learn how to use the Map the link is in my bio. My child demonstrates PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance or better termed Persistent Drive for Autonomy), where typical demands, even gentle ones, can feel overwhelming and trigger her nervous system into fight, flight, or freeze. It’s not defiance. It’s her body saying, “I feel unsafe.” Over the years, I’ve found ways to support her, using declarative language, offering choices, and reducing pressure and it helps her feel safe and capable. But knowing what PDA is, and having more information about how her nervous system responds, lets me support her even more. #pda #pdaparenting #pathologicaldemandavoidance #persistentdriveforautonomy #autism

Pathological Demand Avoidance, PDA, or Persuasive Drive for Autonomy. Extreme avoidance of everyday tasks, demands or expectations due to the need for control and autonomy, high anxiety and perceived threat on nervous system safety. You may have experienced the following? 💟 Severe Anxiety, usually around expectations or demands. 💟 Extreme focus on personal control. 💟 Social strategies including distraction, withdrawal or negotiation to avoid demands. 💟 Difficulty or inability to understand hierarchy/authority. 💟 Equalizing behaviours when feeling threatened eg swearing, hitting, spitting. 💟 Intense need for autonomy, a small demand such as "Can you brush your teeth" can feel threatening. 💟 Feeling as though you need to walk on eggshells around your child as to not activate their nervous system. 💟 Massive explosions after school 💟 Praise seems to upset your child? 💟 Typical autism strategies not working and if anything are making things worse? 💟 Nobody can believe what home life looks for you because your child appears 'fine' in most settings? If you are nodding your head, welcome to my page. You have found your people. 👋🏻 I am an adult PDAer with two PDA daughters and I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that I too, thought I was going crazy. We've all been there. Nobody listened, nobody understood. But I listened to my gut because I knew there was more to what was going on for us than just 'bad behaviour', or 'extreme defiance' which needed better parenting! 🫠 You're not going loopy...but this life is one that many will never understand, which is why I created this page. I am here with you, my inbox is always open, because like you, I was once alone trying to figure it all out and I now want to be here for you 🫂 #pathologicaldemandavoidance #autism #actuallyautistic #pdaautism #autismawareness #pdaprofile #pdaparenting #pdaadvocate #pdaawareness #autismacceptance

ODD and PDA can look almost exactly the same on the surface—refusal, arguing, meltdowns when asked to do something—but what’s driving it underneath is completely different. 💢 ODD is typically understood as a behavioral pattern—learned oppositional responses shaped by environment, frustration, or inconsistent boundaries. 😰 PDA, on the other hand, is a nervous system response rooted in anxiety and loss of perceived safety or autonomy. The avoidance isn’t defiance—it’s panic. Here’s one way you can spot the difference: Traditional behavioral plans often work for ODD kids. They backfire for PDA kids—because compliance feels like threat, not success. PDA kids can often get mislabeled as ODD (especially in the US) because 1. PDA is not officially a diagnostic label according to the DSM5 and 2. Because of that there’s limited professional knowledge and acceptance about what PDA is and how it presents. If your child has been diagnosed ODD but your intuition tells you thats not quite right, I highly suggest going down the PDA rabbit hole to see if that fits better. It was the biggest light bulb moment I’ve had as a mother so far. Questions? Let me know in the comments 🤍🦓 #pathologicaldemandavoidance #pdaautism #pervasivedriveforautonomy #pdaparenting #oppositionaldefiantdisorder #odd
