CHDiaphragm pacemaker?? You mean heart pacemaker, right? Today let’s answer some of the most commonly asked questions about my diaphragm pacemaker for rare disease day!
✨What does having a diaphragm pacemaker feel like? Honestly, most of the time I don’t feel it at all. Your diaphragm doesn’t actually have any feeling, so I get a sort of phantom feeling up in my collar bones if I feel it.
✨Why do you have a diaphragm pacemaker? My hypothalamus doesn’t tell me to breathe. Normally your brain tells you to breathe and you don’t really think about it. If I want to take a breath, I have to think about it.
✨How did you find out you weren’t breathing? It was caught by accident during autonomic testing at the Mayo Clinic. I then had a lot of testing to figure out exactly what was happening. For example during one test they monitored how many times I breathed a minute and discovered it was 0-2. When I did breathe it looked more like a death rattle because I truly didn’t know how to and had been trying to copy other people. They had to have everyone else leave the room so I wouldn’t try to copy them. This had been how I had survived all those years before my pacemaker. If I started talking to someone or reading, it automatically went to 0 breaths a minute.
✨Why didn’t you know you weren’t breathing? The guess is that I’ve been like this since I was very young. This is my normal. I thought everyone else had to tell themselves to breathe too.
✨Were there clues when you were younger that this was happening? Yes! Doctors found notes from visits when I was little where my mom would tell doctors I would wake up in the middle of the night purple and crying. I could stay under water as long as I wanted when I was swimming. My brain didn’t have any alarms to tell me to come back up for air.
✨I was extremely lucky. Most people who have similar conditions to me and don’t get the medical care they need don’t live very long. I received my diaphragm pacemaker at age 24. When my doctors realized what was happening, most of my symptoms started making sense for the first time ever. Everyday I wake up knowing how lucky I am to be here.
