“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” The paraphrased Einstein quote is famous but does nature have to be beautiful or simple to work? And if the mathematics are more beautiful, does that beauty work as an indication of truth? Theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder (@sabinehossenfelder) hopes to dispel these assumptions in physics. This video is part of our Faith, Fantasy and Physics series in partnership with @instituteofartandideas instituteofartandideas. I have to defend my doctoral thesis soon, so as practice, I'll tell you what I've been working on. Today's video is about the information you can get from a sample when you shoot at it. If you want to know about the microscopic structure, that is, how the atoms are arranged, you're usually not gonna get around using X-rays or neutrons. X-rays are basically just electromagnetic waves, and thus light, but with a bit more energy than what we can see with our eyes. Neutrons are the particles that, along with protons and electrons, make up an atom. In the end, you can use X-rays and neutrons for similar diagnostic purposes, though they provide different contrasts and have various pros and cons. Now, when you shoot these at a sample and look at what comes out the other side, you usually get something like this. This is a so-called structure factor, which is related, through a few indirect steps, to how often atoms in the sample are located at a certain distance from each other. This means you can see whether everything is just randomly distributed or if there is at least some short-range order. Spoiler: There is! To measure this, we went to the German Electron Synchrotron in Hamburg for the X-rays and to the ILL in France for the neutrons. Fun fact: While I was at the ILL, my appearance on The Voice was airing, and the internet there was absolute cr.. So, what's the result of all my PhD work? Well, I can't reveal that yet because the results haven't been published, but as soon as I've finished the defense, I'll definitely share them! #physicist #phd #neutronscattering #xraydiffraction #doktorarbeit #materialsscience #materialphysics

A physical quantity that's invaluable to know in materials science is the melt viscosity, which essentially denotes how gooey a liquid is. For example, honey is more viscous than oil, and oil is more viscous than water. To measure the melt viscosity of a metal, there's something called an electrostatic levitator, which is a fancy term for a device that creates a strong electric field in a vacuum, exerting a force on the sample to counteract gravity. Then, you hit it with a laser to melt it. Well, it sounds cool, but it’s not so fun when you have to wait 2 hours for the vacuum to stabilize and then another hour and a half for melting because if you heat it too quickly, the sample just jumps out. Anyway, you can make the sample "wobble" by adding a small oscillating field to the large static electric field, and how quickly the oscillation decays is related to the viscosity. This means I can capture the shadow of the sample with a high-speed camera, and the oscillating radius over time should follow a sine enveloped by a decaying exponential function. When I fit this data, I get a time constant, which tells me how fast the oscillation decays, and from that, I can calculate the viscosity. I have to do this for a range of temperatures and for different compositions, and you can imagine how "exciting" it is when it takes 3.5 hours to melt the sample, only to have 3 out of 4 attempts result in nothing more than this 🫠. #physicist #metallicglasses #matetialsscience #phd #doktorarbeit #meltviscosity

It’s time to paint my new filming space, because this two-tone sad pink does not scream “we love astrophysics here!” to me at all. What do you think of the colour I went with in the end? I’m really excited to finally get some furniture soon for this space and we can start building up the backdrop for my videos. #homeoffice #interiordesign #youtuber #filmingspace #womeninstem #astrophysicist #physicist #midnightblue #office 👩🏽‍💻 I’m Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don’t know. If you’ve ever wondered about something in space and couldn’t find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.
