Where there's smoke, there's fire... but that's not always a bad thing! SoWBA's sanctuary teams, supported by the assistance of volunteers, will be conducting spring prescribed burns, which are crucial to restore and conserve habitat in Wisconsin. If you’ve spotted flagging tied around a tree in one of our parks, you might wonder what it means. In many cases, our forestry crew placed it there to mark an important habitat tree to protect. During wildfire recovery and fuels reduction projects, crews remove some dead and downed trees. But they also leave many standing because many of these trees provide critical habitat and forage for wildlife. Before any work begins, crews walk each project area and identify habitat trees. They look for: 🐤 Woodpecker granaries 🐤 Nesting cavities and other signs of wildlife use 🐤 Structural features that support birds and mammals When crews find a habitat tree, they flag it for protection. The flagging is removed after the project is completed. Thoughtful forest management, such as removing ladder fuels and unwanted vegetation, can improve habitat conditions. For example, when more sunlight reaches the forest floor, native plants and insect populations can increase. That growth creates new opportunities for birds to hunt and forage. Our crews spend long days in the field improving forest health, and they’ve spotted some incredible birds along the way. It’s their goal to make sure birds’ habitats, as well as ours, remain resilient to future wildfires. Our prescribed fire work is funded in part by Parks for All — Measure M. Friends ventured to Six Mile Cypress North — the headwaters of the Slough — to learn about the power and purpose of prescribed burns. 🔥🌿 From careful planning to ecological impact, we discovered how fire helps restore and protect this unique ecosystem. Nature showed up for us too: Eastern Bluebird, Swallow-tailed Kite, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-headed Woodpecker, and even orchid bees! Learning together at the very start of the Slough’s journey — what a day. 💧✨ Thanks to Ian Nix and Debbie Guadagnino for the wildlife images. #fire #wildlife #nature #slough #birds

Controlled burns in natural areas—for example, forests, savannas, and plains—are critical to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Fire helps knock back invasive species, catalyzes new plant growth, restores sunlight and nutrients to the soil, and reduces wildfire risk. In our conversations with nonprofit leaders, we have been surprised by the level of optimism about strategic planning in this post–federal-cuts era. After the shock and disruption of the funding flash fires that ripped through social impact organizations of all types, many are building back—starting fresh to preserve the best of their past work while also pushing into new services, audiences, and partnerships that will define their future.

Absolutely love seeing some wild coveys while conducting our burns this spring. It’s been awesome to see first hand how wild quail react directly to fire. They’re extremely nonchalant, and we have seen at least 5 coveys walking within feet of the flames. Many times you can see them walking in a line across the fire breaks as the flames come their way. Gotta love the fire bird!

🐦 “Not only are we losing birds, we are losing them faster and faster from year to year,” said study co-author Marta Jarzyna, an ecologist at Ohio State University. There is a strong interaction between climate change and agriculture in their effect on bird populations. 🐦‍⬛ The scientists found statistical correlations between accelerated decline rates and high fertilizer/pesticide use and amount of cropland. 🦗 The biggest impact of agricultural intensity though is our war on insects. Many of the birds with population declines depend heavily on insects for food. ➡️ apnews.com/article/birds-losses-faster-climate-change-agriculture-8cf053bda9dad4fe2dd5a1c7048b6d39 🔗 in stories

Our animal of the month is Costa, our broad winged hawk! Costa got his name because Costa Rica is one of only a handful of countries with resident Broad Winged Hawks.🌞 Broad Winged Hawks are known as one of the few raptorial “Neotropical Migrants” of North America. They’re famous for making the annual 4,000+ mile journey to South America for the winter! 🤗 #4halabama #4hcenter #4h #alabama4h #scienceschool #4hscience #animalambassador #alabama4hcenter #environmentaleducation #raptor

3 Billion birds have been lost since 1970 across the United States and Canada. You can measure the heartbeat of the planet through birds. They are the literal canary in the coal mine for greater ecological losses we are currently experiencing. Even in our current political climate there are things that can be done to help protect wildlife and the environment: 1) Oppose overdevelopment. Fighting overdevelopment of critical habitat is probably the best way to help species locally. It is much easier to influence environmental policy in your local area. 2) Stop using Pesticides. This is an easy one, stop using glyphosate and other pesticides. They can be used to help conservation in some instances when removing invasive species but when it comes to your yard, pull the weeds or just let them be. 3) Rewild your Yard. Plant native species, remove invasive and non-natives, and stop keeping a manicured lawn. It’s 2025, no one cares how green your grass is. There are a lot more ways to help with wildlife conservation but these are steps that can be taken now by anyone to try and help wildlife locally. Let me know in the comments if you have any other ideas on how we can help conserve wildlife
