Luke Saydon’s smash hit Il-Każin Tal-Imqarbin just finished its second sold out run, receiving another heap of rave reviews from adoring audiences. 

The show, which captivated audiences with its moving portrayal of 1980s Malta, particularly the struggles of the queer community during the AIDS epidemic, became one of the most talked-about and praised productions of 2024 and was revived for a second run all through September of this year.

The ever-so talented cast, made up of @lukesaydon himself, @jamie_cardona, @ryangrechmusic, @raphaelpace and Josette Ciappara brought the story to life with powerful performances. Including the song ‘Raġel Normali’ posted to social media by Pace yesterday in remembrance of the fantastic artistic journey. 

“Forever grateful to the entire @saydonstudio team and creatives for the trust and space to bring this role to life,” he wrote.  The heartfelt musical, which touched on themes of loss, resilience, and identity, had an overwhelming response from audiences. Many were left in tears, acknowledging that it was one of the best Maltese productions they had ever seen. 

With an original musical score arranged by Matteo Depares and Aleandro Spiteri and an emotional stage design by Andrew Borg Wirth, Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin has managed to start a much-needed conversation in a way only theatre can. 

It reminded audiences that art doesn’t just entertain; it heals, it confronts, and it connects us to who we are.

The cruel #GOP has ERASED the rainbow crosswalk that was painted in 2017 to honor the 49 people who were murdered at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub, an LGBTQIA+ nightclub. At the time, it was the deadliest mass shooting on American soil. Instead of focusing on how to stop institutionalized hatred of the queer community or how to pass gun laws that could prevent another mass shooting, the Republican party of greed and selfishness has chosen to take the time to complete this hurtful act, something that achieves nothing positive, only pain. What other purpose than to demean the victims who were shot to death? As well as hurt their surviving friends and family who take solace from this small but beautiful memorial. I try to hard to remember that, in the long run, love wins... and this song helps me simmer in fury and sadness. In 2016, on the day after the shooting, my husband James came up with the idea of doing a "We Are The World" version of Bachrach/David's "What The World Needs Now Is Love". We gathered our friends, recorded it that Wednesday and it was released a few days later, going to number one on iTunes and raising over $100,000 for the victims families as well as The Trevor Project. The AMAZING news is that every day, the people of Orlando have been putting the rainbow crosswalk BACK!!! You can't stop what's right! #KeepOrlandosRainbow --Thank you to all the amazing singers who joined, Robbie Rozelle for the beautiful image, Van Dean, Michael Moritz Jr and Broadway Records for releasing it, the wonderful Michael Croiter for mixing it with us, Cameron Moncur for the glorious orchestrations, Charlie Gordon for contracting my fantastic orchestra, Mary Davis, Blake Ross, Joey Monda, Daniel Rafinejad, Jaime/Gary Rubenstein, Karen Evanouskas, Janet Billig Rich, Mark Sendroff, Avatar Studios and SO many more who helped us get this out so quickly. If we “forget” all the ways we struggled in our early stages of development, we will struggle to conjure empathy for others who are in the process of changing. Remembering that the knowledge we have came from others (mostly BIPOC and/or disabled teachers), was at times accessed because of our privilege, and took time is essential to connecting across difference. Take a moment to throw some compassion to the younger version of yourself who was still learning, and build towards a future version of yourself who can have compassion for all the ways you’re still learning now! Nearly half have removed themselves from in-person spaces. @eshelonline Pride flags with stars of David have been banned from parades. The Dyke March has deemed itself anti Zionist. @yoavdavis said his identities are now dueling. That before 10/7 he’d consider himself first gay, then Jewish, then Israeli. Now, it’s Jewish, then Israeli, then gay. “I believe that a person kind of identifies who he is by the parts within him that are most targeted and most discriminated against, and I feel like today being Jewish and being Israeli is far more controversial and far more dangerous than just being gay.”
