HEDIY home remedy: MUSTARD PLASTER
This time of year is a great time to get ready with the ingredients for simple home remedies. It’s always helpful to have a few tricks up your sleeve for those middle of the night wake ups or long weekends when it’s just harder to get what you need. This one is so simple and it’s one of my favourites!
A mustard plaster was traditionally used to treat coughs, chest and lung infections in the days before modern medicine. Can also be used to relieve back pain. These plasters draw out toxins from the body by creating heat. Other than a mustard plaster, I give my kids honey, lemon water, black elderberry, garlic & echinacea. I don’t give my kids cough suppressants.
You need:
✔️Thin piece of cotton cloth that can be folded in half to cover the chest area
✔️Dry mustard powder
✔️White flour
✔️Warm water
✔️A little mixing bowl
The ratio of mustard to flour determines the strength of the plaster.
A very weak plaster would be 1:8 (1/4tsp mustard to 2tsp flour).
1:6 is suitable for children (example shown in the video which is 1/2tsp mustard powder to 1TBS flour).
1:4 is much stronger and good for relieving chest congestion.. use 1/2 tsp mustard powder to 2tsp flour.
Mix together and spread on the cloth, fold it in half and lay it on the chest. Don’t let the raw plaster touch their skin. It is meant to be absorbed through the cloth.
If using on kids, make sure to check their skin frequently to ensure they aren’t itchy or irritated or looking inflamed. We aim for 15-20 minutes at a time and do this 2-3 times during the day. Hope this helps!

THWhy you need potassium ⬇️
Potassium, along with sodium, is a solvent mineral, which helps regulate heart rate, blood pressure, ph balance. It aids in stomach acid production, protein absorption + blood sugar regulation.
Potassium sits inside the cell (with sodium outside) + serves as a key part of the sodium-potassium pump in each cell, shuttling nutrients, including hormones, in + out.
If you have hypo/hyper thyroid symptoms but perfect blood labs, you may be struggling to get the hormone into the cell due to low potassium.
In the stress response, sodium raises your heart rate + potassium lowers it.
Potassium is depleted by stress, various medications + synthetic supplements.
Some sources to replenish daily:
✨ adrenal cocktail
✨ trace mineral drops
✨ coconut water
✨ aloe vera juice
✨ cream of tartar
✨ fruit, esp citrus + tropical
✨ potatoes
✨ milk (ideally unpasteurized)
