Reflex integration is not about correcting children. It’s about meeting the nervous system where it is. When we join a child’s rhythm and scaffold from safety, regulation comes first — and skills follow naturally. This is how confidence grows. STNR/ATNR integration using a headlamp 🔦 This is one of my favorite ways to work on reflex integration and here’s why.. It’s ACTIVE integration. A lot of approaches have kids passively moving their head through the pattern over and over but I believe the nervous system needs active intentional movement to truly integrate In my clinical experience kids with retained STNR and ATNR often move in limited range and having something worth finding at the end of that range naturally drives them to go further than they would otherwise Here’s what’s happening 👇 Quadruped while looking DOWN at a small card between their hands then UP at the large board to find the match loading and moving through the STNR Board positioned to the SIDE so they rotate their head to ring items with the headlamp hitting the ATNR on both sides The headlamp forces the HEAD to lead the movement. You can’t cheat with just your eyes 👀 This activity also works on visual perceptual skills and ocular motor skills so they truly get so much out of ONE activity Save this for your next session or with your child! #reflexintegration #primitivereflexes #STNR #ATNR #pediatricot

Let’s talk about the STNR reflex🧠🚼 STNR typically emerges around 6-9 mo (depending on your source) and integrates by ~11 mo. When it is present it can affect posture, handwriting, tolerance for sitting at a desk, and coordination. It affects arm and leg positioning and can cause “W sitting”. Through these activities in quadruped, this helps a child weight bear through their extremities, facilitate controlled head movements while challenging core strength, shoulder stability and overall body awareness. Activities like this are easy to incorporate as a preparatory approach in school based before working on the functional tasks. Reflex integration is not just for outpatient settings!📢✨ #occupationaltherapy #schoolbasedot #reflexintegration #primitivereflexes #pedsot

ATNR reflex activities 🧠 The Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) is an early reflex that should integrate as a child develops. When it remains active, it can impact coordination, crossing midline, and handwriting skills. These activities help support integration by encouraging the arms and body to work together across midline. Targeting: • Crossing midline • Bilateral coordination • Postural control • Visual-motor integration • Handwriting readiness Supporting reflex integration helps build the foundation for more efficient movement and learning. Play-based. Functional. Intentional OT. 💛 #pediatricot #reflexintegration #handwritingreadiness #grossmotorskills #occupationaltherapy

✨ TLR Integration! The Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) is activated by head position. ⬇️ Head down (neck flexion) → arms & legs flex ⬆️ Head up (neck extension) → arms & legs extend (“Superman”) One simple way to support TLR integration is tummy time on elbows: ✔️ Arms at ~90° ✔️ Legs straight (hips and knees in extension) ✔️ Head lifted up (it is okay to support the head to maintain an upright position) But why is it important? • Reflex integration makes way for more mature movement patterns • Builds core and postural strength • Improves coordination & motor planning • Helps with smooth transitions between movements • Lays the foundation for crawling, sitting, and later gross motor skills You may notice your child begin commando scrawling with arms once it integrates! How: Start with 30-second increments, building up to 5 minutes daily for about 30 days. You can also use a wedge or small block/towel to increase and support extension at the hip! Consistency matters more than perfection. Try to do it as much as you can! #ot #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #pediatricOT #primitivereflexes #tlr

OT in action for vestibular processing, reflex integration, postural control, motor planning, etc. This activity: 🧠Promotes vestibular processing by encouraging controlled head and body position changes while building postural control and balance 💡helps integrate the TLR reflex as it promotes cervical flexion and extension which activates this reflex. 💪Strengthens core through dynamic reaching ✅ Improves motor planning and attention as he responds to unpredictable cues 🛑Compenstions to look out for include leaning back too far (we cue him not to bump into the wall), using only one side of the body to reach instead of both, and rushing through movements instead of controlled, intentional reaching. #morethanagym #sensorygym #pediatricot #pediot #occupationaltherapy

Reflex integration is growing in popularity (yay!) but it’s so important to identify the functional symptoms of retained reflexes as well as how the reflexive patterns actually present in infants, so we can properly integrate them with children / adults! The TLR splits the body in half- front to back and there are two patterns- flexion and extension. When integrating this reflex, we need to address both! Hence, why I love these two activities to much! Try them and report back! ⚡️ Comment: REFLEX if you want more guidance or if you’re a therapist and want to earn CEUs while you learn! #primitivereflexes #reflexintegration #occupationaltherapy #adhd #activitiesforkids

✨ OT Activity Description – Balance & Reflex Integration ✨ In this Occupational Therapy activity, the child walks and steps carefully between hoops placed on the mat while maintaining balance and body control. This task challenges the child to coordinate foot placement, posture, and movement in a structured way 🌈 🧠 Reflexes Addressed: 👣 Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) – supports balance, postural control, and coordination against gravity ↔️ ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) – promotes lower-body coordination and dissociation during movement 🌀 Proprioceptive Processing – improves body awareness and motor planning 🌟 Skills Developed: • Balance and stability • Lower-limb coordination • Body awareness • Motor planning • Attention and controlled movement This activity is especially helpful for children with poor balance, delayed gross motor skills, retained reflexes, and sensory processing difficulties. Play-based challenges like this strengthen the mind–body connection while making therapy engaging and fun 💛 ✨ Strong balance builds confident movement! 🏫 Bright Beginnings – Early Intervention & Therapy Centre 📍 Gali No. 8, Model Town, Near Shri Rama Bharti Play School, Bahadurgarh, Haryana – 124507 📞 90349 21695 | 83077 16825 #BrightBeginnings #OccupationalTherapy #BalanceTraining #ReflexIntegration #TLR #ATNR #GrossMotorSkills #SensoryIntegration #EarlyIntervention #ChildDevelopment

Signs your kiddo may have a retained ATNR can include difficulty crossing midline, poor hand eye coordination, challenges with reading, difficulty with writing, and letter reversals ✍️🧠 ATNR is a primitive reflex that should integrate early in development. When it remains active, it can impact learning, motor skills, and classroom performance. Identifying these signs early allows therapy to support reflex integration and help kids feel more confident and successful at school! pediatric occupational therapy retained ATNR primitive reflex integration child development learning difficulties hand eye coordination crossing midline fine motor skills writing challenges reading difficulties pediatric therapy early intervention
