QURobert Mueller died on Friday at the age of eighty-one. Within hours, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he was glad Mueller was dead.
There is an ancient proverb that dates back to the 6th century. Never speak ill of the dead. The principle is rooted in a simple idea. The dead cannot defend themselves, so the living should show restraint. That norm has been consistent across ancient civilizations, major world religions, and modern Western culture for thousands of years.
Robert Mueller was a Princeton graduate who waited a full year for an injured knee to heal so the Marines would accept him for Vietnam. He was shot in combat, received a Purple Heart, and went right back to his unit. He later joined the Justice Department, prosecuted some of the most high-profile criminal cases in American history, and was confirmed as FBI director 98 to zero. Seven days after he was sworn in, two planes hit the World Trade Center. He served under four presidents from both parties.
When Mueller was appointed to investigate Trump, he spent twenty-two months on the case and never spoke publicly. He did not charge Trump. His reasoning was that because he could not indict a sitting president, he could not give the president a trial, and it would be unfair to publicly accuse him of a crime without giving him the chance to defend himself.
Mueller chose not to accuse Trump because Trump would not have had the opportunity to defend himself.
When Mueller died, Trump celebrated.
