“Walking fast with the ruck is uncomfortable. I’m just gonna trot.” - Stud who tried it one time single time and wasn’t elite at it. Imagine sitting down to play the piano for the 1st time and expecting it to be comfortable. Or getting under a barbell for a squat and being an expert. It doesn’t work that way. Wearing a ruck is uncomfortable relative to most activities. Whether standing, walking slow, trotting… Or walking fast. It will be the 1st time, 2nd time, probably the 5th time. But if you continue doing it, it becomes less uncomfrotable over time. The problem is most guys don’t do it for long enough to get there. It’s a leisure walk or a trot/shuffle/run. To be clear, being a fast ruck runner is key for success. But it’s not ideal to ruck-run unless you’re closing in on selection. If you work up to walking fast, you can do it year round and stay available. I have multiple clients walking sub 13 min miles…comfortably. (Yes, short kings too). Why? When they first told me it was uncomfortable (95% do), I replied: keep doing it. It’ll become more comfortable. And with time, not only does it become 2nd nature, but they also get faster…by a lot. As far as tactics, think of it like running. General running guidelines are to focus on higher cadence > longer strides. The same applies here. If you’re over-striding, you’ll need to overcome an inherent braking force from your foot landing in front of midline. Not only is it less efficient (slower, more fatiguing), but more stressful on the musculoskeletal system. Cue leg turnover > stride longer. So if you’re interested in developing the mos underrated selection fitness capacity—fast walking under a ruck—trust the process. Continue training, and over time, it won’t suck as much. I think an “Only THIS works” approach to programming for SOF is propaganda pushed by ignorant ~military bros who don’t know any better and mask their ignorance about improving fitness by cramming “hard stuff” into programs because ‘selection is hard.’ 🤦 Things like: “You HAVE to do barbell compounds to get stronger” “You HAVE to do workouts that leave you smoked” “You won’t have optimal conditions at SFAS so you should train in sub-optimal conditions like less food and less sleep.” This is just the tip of the ice berg for stupid sh** I see in SOF Prep Programs across the internet. Why it’s all wrong: -Hybrid programming is a game of trade offs. Not every exercise is worth the residual fatigue, not every set & rep scheme is worth the central nervous system burden. You MUST USE the minimum amount of work to accomplish the ends, not the maximum amount of work. Few understand this, fewer understand how to program for it. -Different trainees have different capacities. What works for one person may not work for another. This is DOUBLY TRUE when you consider training age. Half the guys I work with or consult with who are training for selection do not have the requisite years of lifting barbells to include deadlifting or back squatting into their hybrid program. (SFAS prep is not the time to learn) -SFAS Prep is not about doing hard things, not until the very end, in the final 8-12 weeks. It is simply about improving the weak aspects of your fitness and performance. Doing generally “hard stuff” is not the fastest path to improving specific performance metrics. -Arbitrary programming increases individual risk of injury. Periodt. Tailored programming greatly reduces risk. I suggest using a 1 on 1 coach to program for you, or consider consulting with one to get specific about what YOUR prep needs. Doing a sof prep program just because it’s called “sof prep” = not trying hard enough. #specialforces #sfas #army #military #running #deadlift

Team week success formula: Stop trying to be a master at everything. Pick one or 2 things you’re good at, and double down. As long as you’re not a major liability in any one area, if you’re the… Strong Ranger and NOTHING ELSE, you’ll thrive (this one is very trainable, btw). An overall leader who takes ownership, sets the tone, is the example, makes the tough decisions, has the hard conversations, and screams “Leader of Men”, you’re a shoe-in (This can be learned/developed with some effort, too). An engineering genius who can always be relied upon to build your team’s contraptions, it’s a no brainer. A knot wizard who can tie every knot in the book blindfolded—even better, able teach the less knot competent guys (like I was) your ways, you’re a massive asset. A land nav and route planning savant who’s always setting your team up for success movement-wise, there isn’t a single guy on the team who won’t appreciate it. If you’re Mr. Cohesion, and always able to raise the spirits and motivation of the team as a whole (DIFFERENT from Mr. Cheerleader/fake positivity), game over. You’ll kill it. And so on… The problem guys face is they try to be everything all at once. That’s like Stephen Curry trying to post up 7’ guys in the paint, rather than playing to his strengths of ball handling, shooting and seeing the floor better than anyone in history, while letting his forwards play their roles. Or Tom Brady running receiver routes in the offseason so he can play wideout next year instead of being THE MAN who throws perfect passes to his wideouts (who know their roles and execute). It’s a TEAM. And everyone on the team has a role. Of course, become at least baseline competent at everything, such that you’re not standing out for bad reasons. But past that, leverage the f*ck out of the things you’re already good at. If your whole team does this? You’ll be done 3 hours before everyone else every day. (This was the 2nd team I was on in a nutshell.) It’s really that simple. #sfas #teamwork #specialforces #greenberets #skills

Pre-selection anxiety. It’s totally normal. In fact, it’s a better sign than having no anxiety or doubt. This applies to just about any lofty pursuit; those wired to chase extreme outcomes know that extreme measures must be taken throughout the process. Risk is high. Comparison to your peers is inevitable. Chances of success are low. Hard, frustrating, painful work is unavoidable. And that’s just before selection starts. Everything magnifies once you hit the ground at Mackall. Pursuing things like this without a hint of anxiety or doubt is, as far as I’m concerned, a complete pipe dream. That’s why most people stick to things inside their comfort zone. But at the same exact time, if you’re wired a certain way, all this risk, uncertainty and known challenge is EXACTLY what makes things like this worth pursuing. Embrace it. Focus on the process (not the outcome). Keep going.
