SO1. In Sweden, most houses go through a bidding process, meaning that the price you see listed is often just the starting bid. In the end, the seller decides who he wants to sell to, so it’s not always necessarily the highest bidder.
2. There are different places to search for a house - the most common ones are Hemnet.se, Booli.se, or Blocket.se. But not all houses are listed online. If there’s a specific area or town you’re interested in it’s worth checking with people in the area if they know of something for sale. They often have the best insights into what is maybe unofficially available.
3. You’ll need a Swedish bank account to purchase the house. This wasn’t yet the case when I bought mine but nowadays many realtors will ask for the money to be transferred from a Swedish bank account. Keep that in mind before going house hunting as the process can take some time and is unfortunately not that straightforward.
4. Location is what matters most, at least in my opinion. You can make changes to the house, but you cannot change your location, so if there’s something that bothers you, it won’t be easy to change. Are there any building major projects planned in the near future, how busy is the road, does the forest belong to you or could it be torn down by yet another forest company in the near future. And trust me on that one..I’ve seen gorgeous properties being destroyed by them chopping down the entire forest around it.
5. And most importantly: Don’t just buy a house here because it’s cheap. Buy one to either live here permanently or at least a considerable amount of time during the year. Many places especially in the countryside are slowly dying out because people only spend like 2 weeks a year there. SO be mindful when considering buying that you’ll actually find the time to be there.

IMAlright, let’s be honest—how many times have you heard someone confuse Sweden with Switzerland?
Maybe you’ve even done it yourself (no judgment!).
Well, guess what? Sweden has had ENOUGH.
And instead of just rolling their eyes, they decided to clap back in the most genius way possible—with a viral marketing campaign that’s got the whole world talking.
In October 2023, Visit Sweden teamed up with Forsman & Bodenfors to launch "Sweden (not Switzerland) – Luxury of a Different Nature."
The campaign kicks off with a hilarious video featuring a very serious-looking Swedish representative, who basically sits down to “negotiate” with Switzerland.
Her proposal? Since the world keeps mixing them up, why not just split their identities officially?
✔ Switzerland can keep its mountains—Sweden’s got endless sandbanks.
✔ Switzerland can be all about business and banks—Sweden is about rooftop bars and pure relaxation.
✔ Switzerland gets yodeling—Sweden? Northern Lights, deep forests, and the longest coastline in Europe.
And then he hits us with the line that sums it all up: "Sweden is NOT Switzerland." 🙌
🌎 Within weeks, it was EVERYWHERE. More than 800 media outlets (we’re talking Forbes, Le Figaro, Corriere della Sera—big names) picked it up, covering it in 45+ countries. Social media? Flooded with people laughing, tagging their friends, and sharing their own Sweden vs. Switzerland mix-ups.
And the best part? It actually worked. Studies showed that over 70% of people who saw the campaign said they were now more interested in visiting Sweden.
Oh, and did I mention? This campaign also went on to win multiple awards, including Gold and Silver at the 2024 Guldägget Awards (Sweden’s top creative marketing awards).
Instead of getting annoyed by the mix-up, Sweden owned it. They didn’t try to fight the conversation—they hijacked it and made it their own!
