Follow @modernmindfulparent for more real + honest parenting truths 🌱 What if the reason your baby isn’t sleeping… is because there’s no rhythm yet? Every parent wants the “sleeping through the night” miracle. But here’s the truth bomb: babies thrive on predictable patterns, not constant reacting. Many pediatricians recommend feeding newborns about every 2–3 hours in the early weeks — and building a simple rhythm like: Feed → Play → Sleep 🍼🎶😴 When baby wakes, you feed. Then change and interact. Then back to sleep. Over time, their body starts recognizing the pattern. And yes — not every cry means hunger. Sometimes it’s fatigue, overstimulation, or just adjusting. But here’s the empowering part: There is no one-size-fits-all formula. Some babies sleep at 6 weeks. Some don’t. And that’s normal. Your job isn’t perfection. It’s consistency and responsiveness. Build rhythm. Protect naps. Stay calm. Share this with a tired parent who needs hope tonight 💭 #BabySleep #NewParentLife #InfantCare #MindfulParenting #SleepTraining

It felt like my only options were bedsharing or sleep training and I just wasn’t interested in any method that included even 5, 10, 15 minute crying intervals. We also live in a two bedroom so I couldn’t do a floor bed in his own room, since our 6 year is in our other bedroom. So this was kinda the next best thing and it has been such a game changer for us! The bed is bursting at the seams. Little feet. Warm cheeks. Someone’s elbow in my ribs. And still…there’s always space. (Actually eating til the younger joins us. ) And they know it. 🤍 Before I became a mom, I had the schedules saved. The routines memorized. I was fully prepared to “do it right.” And lawd knew there was no way I would be cosleeping. Then she was born… and my instincts were louder than any course I had studied. It didn’t feel aligned for us, and I’ve learned that’s reason enough. With my first, I knew I didn’t want to sleep train… but I also didn’t know what the alternative looked like. There were long nights. Lots of second-guessing. A lot of wondering if I was making it harder than it needed to be. With my second, I let go. I leaned into bedsharing. I stopped fighting biology. And the peace that followed? For both of us. In our house, doors stay open. Beds do too. We snuggle until they drift off. We answer the calls in the dark. We’ll keep making room until the day they don’t ask anymore. If you’ve chosen connection over convention, you’ve found your people here. This is the corner of the internet where we normalize not sleep training, and where 3am doesn’t feel so lonely. Not everyone can just “wait it out” for years and hope that sleep their babies will sleep one day. If you have other children, no support, or you’re already exhausted… waiting it out can do more harm than good. The good news is: You don’t need to sleep train or leave your baby to cry to improve sleep. There are lots of gentle things you can do from the beginning that make a huge difference. Here are 5 simple things you can do from day 1: •Don’t let your baby sleep longer than 2.5–3 hours during the day (7am–10pm) •Don’t go longer than 3 hours between feeds in the day •Keep days light, bright and active. Don’t be quiet when the bay is sleeping, have noise and hustle and bustle between 7am-10pm. Have the total opposite. Keep the nights dark, boring and calm. No overhead lighting, screens, minimal talking. •Use consistent sleep associations each time you are not contact napping e.g. white noise, sleep sack, same phrase •Try a paediatric osteopath if you’re doing everything ‘right’ and it doesn’t feel like it’s working. I take my baby to Simone @kaneandrossclinics These are just the foundations. Inside my guide I walk you through exactly how to build your baby’s sleep from the beginning so you don’t have anything to “fix” it later. ➡️ The bottom line: infant sleep habits are not a problem unless they’re a problem for you (mom). ➡️ When a mom DOES want support and more sleep at night, I recommend Ferber ONLY IF baby is 6 months+, on their growth curve, and have no chronic medical conditions. ➡️ The Ferber method is often misunderstood as simply “cry it out,” but there are important distinctions. Instead of leaving your baby to cry indefinitely, the Ferber method—or delayed intervention —involves letting your baby self-soothe while you check in at increasing intervals. This means you briefly comfort your baby without picking them up, gradually teaching them to fall asleep independently. ➡️ Here’s why it’s considered appropriate for babies 6 months and older: ‼️ Developmental readiness: By around 6 months, many infants have developed more regular sleep cycles and are better able to self-soothe. Ferber in my book DOES include hands on soothing and physical touch during check ins! ‼️ Gradual process: The method isn’t about ignoring your baby’s cries; it’s about gradually extending the time between your check-ins. This gentle approach is designed to help your baby learn to settle themselves without feeling abandoned (I never move intervals greater than 10 minutes apart for infants <1 year). ‼️ Emotional well-being; When applied correctly, the Ferber method does not harm a baby’s emotional development. Instead, it can lead to better sleep patterns for both the baby and parents. ‼️ Structured: this method provides clear steps, allowing you to know when to intervene and when to allow your baby to try settling on their own, which can reduce stress for everyone involved. I will note that if supportive sleep habits are started early on and consistent, a baby may never even need this and will start extending sleep cycles on their own naturally! (4 of my children never needed this method, one of mine did!) Just wanted to show you an example of how it looks when a baby seems awake but they’re actually asleep and just transitioning sleep cycles! Getting them out of the crib during this period may actually wake them up. So make sure your baby is actually awake before rushing in to soothe them. 🫶🏼 Follow along for more newborn sleep tips! Teething is one of those milestones nobody warns you enough about. 🦷 It usually begins around 4–6 months with the lower front teeth, followed by the upper front teeth a few weeks later. Between 8 and 12 months, the lateral incisors appear. From 12 to 16 months, the first molars come in — often a tough phase for sleep. Between 16 and 20 months, the canines erupt. And finally, between 24 and 30 months, the second molars complete the process. This slow, stop-and-go progression means weeks (sometimes months) of sensitive gums, drooling, chewing… and very often: disrupted sleep. Teething is one of the biggest sleep disruptors in the first years of life. Pain and discomfort can lead to frequent night wakings, short naps and early mornings — even in babies who were sleeping well before. In our course “Sleep Regressions & Other Challenges” we explain what’s normal, what’s not, and how to support your baby through teething without turning every night into a battle.
