The snow depths were almost 10 feet/3 meters deep! We dig pits like this for avalanche forecasting, snow science, exercise and practice for avalanche rescue scenarios. We filled the pit back in at the end. In Utah, 95% of our water comes from our snowpack. Despite the copious amounts of snow that Alta receives, Utah is still in a drought. Our upper elevation snowpack is relatively healthy, but the warmer, rainier events have decimated our lower elevation snowpacks. Statewide, our snow water equivalent is around 82% (it’s dropped slightly since I made this video). Let’s keep conserving water and encouraging our policy makers to do more to conserve, like passing incentives to reduce water use (especially for agriculture).
