How I went from a 56 → 80 on NBME/CBSSA in 2 weeks👇 1. I stopped trying to know everything and focused on HighYield AnKing first - You can’t answer questions if you can’t recall the core concepts. - I stopped reviewing entire blocks and started triaging using the HighYield tag. - If you want results fast, you have to be okay letting go of lower yield cards. - Once I finished HY, my confidence jumped because I was familiar again with all the highly testable diseases and concepts. - (Days 15, 16, and 18 of my Road to Step 1 series break down these points more) 2. I still did UWorld and used it to guide Anki. - Anki ≠ application. You need both. - When I missed a question, I used the UWorld → Anki add-on to find extra cards related to that question (even if they weren’t tagged as HY). - Patching weak spots with this method helped me make fewer mistakes. - (More detail: see Days 6 and 7 of Road to Step 1) 3. I front-loaded Anki, then shifted to prioritizing UWorld - While I was still grinding HY, ~80% of my study time was Anki (HY + UWorld incorrects) / 20% UWorld questions. - Once HY was done, my study time shifted to ~40% Anki (maintenance) / 60% UWorld questions. - This is where I felt like big changes were happening. I was maintaining the base and stacking more application reps on top. 4. I made UWorld less intimidating and stopped making my own cards - 10 questions/block, random, tutor mode. - Smaller blocks + instant feedback = less anxiety + better retention. - I stopped making my own flashcards from UWorld explanations and trusted that high-yield topics would come up again in future questions. - This freed up a ton of time and mental energy. - (More detail: see Days 6 and 7 of Road to Step 1) 5. The biggest factor - I finally saw everything that was tagged HighYield in AnKing before my second attempt. - That alone completely changed how the exam felt. Not saying everyone jumps from 56 → 80. But your score will go up if you prioritize what actually shows up. Triage + reps is the name of the game. Follow @doseofscott for more med school advice and tips. Step 1 prep is not hard because the exam is impossible. It gets hard because most students use too many resources and no clear plan. The right way is simple: UWorld + First Aid + Sketchy Micro/Pharma + Pathoma 1–3 + NBMEs + UWSAs + Free 120 Stay consistent. Review mistakes deeply. Stop resource hopping. And build a strong foundation for Step 2 CK and the USA match. We are also inducting only 50 students in our upcoming Step 1 online batch for serious students who want proper guidance, structure, and accountability. If you want the right mentorship and a clear path, this is your chance. Comment “STEP 1” or DM now. First 50 students only. #usmle #usmlestep1 #usa🇺🇸 #step1 #medicine

❌ 1. If You Are in Final Year Without Planning If you’re in final year and suddenly think: “Bro I’ll just give Step 1.” Stop. This pathway requires: 1–2 years of preparation US Clinical Experience (USCE) Research Strong CV building Networking Multiple attempts strategy planning If you’re starting late without strategy, you’ll waste time and money. ❌ 2. If You Are the Only Earning Member Be honest. The full pathway can cost: Exam fees (Step 1, Step 2 CK) OET ECFMG certification USCE rotations Travel + visa Application fees Interview travel (if in-person) It can easily cross $15,000–$25,000+ If your family depends on you financially and there are no savings, this pathway can create massive pressure. Stress kills performance. ❌ 3. If You Cannot Handle Uncertainty Match is not guaranteed. Even after clearing exams, you may not match on first attempt. The National Resident Matching Program publishes match data every year — and thousands don’t match. Imagine: 2–3 years invested. Money invested. Emotional energy invested. And no seat. If uncertainty destroys you mentally — rethink. ❌ 4. If You Struggle With Long-Term Discipline USMLE is not a “motivation” exam. It’s: 8–10 hour study days Repeated revision Question banks like UWorld done multiple times Deep understanding, not memorization If you quit things halfway, this pathway will expose you . ❌ 5. If You Want Quick Money Residency in the US is long. 3–7 years depending on specialty. Yes, attendings earn huge salaries. But first you survive residency with 70–80 hour weeks. If your goal is fast income, there are faster pathways. ❌ 6. If You Cannot Handle Rejection Visa rejection. Rotation rejection. Research rejection. Interview rejection. This system tests resilience more than intelligence. ❌ 7. If You’re Choosing It Only Because It’s “Trending” Don’t choose USMLE because: Your seniors are doing it Instagram makes it look glamorous Someone said “US doctors earn in dollars” Choose it because: You understand the grind You calculated the cost You are mentally ready You have long-term strategy #usmle #step1 #usmlestep1 #usareels #mbbs
