Physics classes often run a balsa wood tower challenge to teach structural engineering principles in a hands-on way. Students must design and build the lightest tower possible, usually using only thin balsa sticks and glue, while making it strong enough to hold as much weight as possible. On testing day, the towers are placed on a base and weights are gradually added on top until the structure either fails or reaches the maximum test load. The final score is usually based on efficiency, how much weight the tower holds relative to its own weight. Because balsa wood is extremely light, even a small tower can sometimes support dozens of pounds if the design distributes forces correctly through triangles and balanced joints. Some of the best designs manage to hold the full 50 pounds, showing that smart engineering can make even fragile materials surprisingly strong.
