Using a mirror, a value checker, and/or a dowel rod have all become so second nature in my studio practice that it catches me a bit off guard when students marvel at these tools. The thing is learning to troubleshoot and check yourself mid painting is such a valuable skill to have as an artist and sometimes it feels like half my process 😅 As 2-D artists we have two main ways to express form: though drawing and through value. If something about your painting seems off structurally but the drawing isn’t the problem then it’s probably your value that’s the culprit. Tip: make sure you use the glasses that are solid and not a gradient so you block out all others colors. These are just a few things I’ve learnt from my first term at art university. With creative degrees especially ones that are self directed I think it’s important to do everything you can because essentially your degree will be what you make it. The discipline with the studio practice has also been something I’ve found really helpful, because even if it’s just going into the studio and you get nothing done. You are still in that environment which means it’s lots more likely for you to be productive. I think at least. And the library is such a wonderful resource there are so many art books, reference images I feel always help me get me out of a slump or fire me up to make my work better. What advice would you offer me ? #artistsoninstagram #artist #artstudents #artuniversity #artdegree

A major institutional survey of Ding Yi (@dingyistudio) opens tomorrow, 3 July, at Château La Coste (@chateaulacoste) in France, featuring over 30 works created over the last forty years. Curated by Alfredo Cramerotti, “Prediction and Retrospection” presents a comprehensive view of Ding’s experimental, process-based, and traditional approaches to contemporary painting. Ding’s work draws upon Eastern philosophy and Western aesthetics, as the artist examines different systems of thought and perspective. Throughout his career, he has has applied this methodology in his studio practice to explore personal and societal cross-cultural perspectives in relation to themes of fast-paced development, the urban environment, and human culture.
