STA little more on the methodology:
I scraped 6 months of posts and comments from the r/mensfashion subrredit using a social listening tool on Apify (basically a way to borrow other people’s code for web scraping). Six months isn’t long enough to say what’s trending this year vs last year, but it does show what items and conversations are increasing as we move into fall/winter. After cleaning the text in R, I tracked how often certain word pairs (bigrams) appeared over time — then ran pretty basic regressions on every term to see which ones had both positive and (statistically) significant increases. The last graphs show the terms with significant + positive growth — slim fit, chore coats, sports coats, and personal style/preference emerged as the most interesting conversations here (unless you guys see any other interesting items in the graphs? let me know)

STDo with this information what you will — but I have personally been enjoying seeing all of the uber baggy and over accessoried (in a good way) man repeller outfits lately.
A bit more on the analysis: I used python to scrape comments from specific threads using the official api, and then did word counting / natural language processing in R.

STheteroskedasticity is difficult to spell 🙃
I do *really* want to know your thoughts on this — have you heard of this theory before and do you think it has (any) legitimacy?
Some more details on the analysis: I chose to use consumer confidence in the economy, first because how people feel could be the strongest indicator on how they are going to be purchasing and because I have been told by manyy economists (or people who frame themselves as such) that using the stock market or inflation is not a good measure of the economy for this kind of research question.
Analysis was done in R using a multiple linear regression, and here are the exact stats:
** The regression coefficient for kitten heels is 0.08 (SE = 0.02, t = 3.57, p < 0.001). This indicates a statistically significant positive effect, suggesting that for each unit increase in the search volume of kitten heels, the CCI is expected to increase by approximately 0.083 points.
** The coefficient for platform heels is -0.07 (SE = 0.01, t = -8.91, p < 0.001). This result is significant and indicates a strong negative association, suggesting that for each unit increase in the search volume for platform heels, the CCI is expected to decrease by approximately 0.074 points.
While some of the other shoe analyses did come back significant, the p-values are pretty weak, especially considering that we are testing 6 types of shoes.
But with the problem of heteroskedasticity — these results should not be taken very seriously 🪩

And for a bit more context: I do realise that the barrel jeans were influenced by Alaia featuring them on the runway for FW2023, and bloomers (the long and short version) were on that very famous FW24 Chloe runway (Chemena Kamali’s debut). However! I do see the silhouettes as very related, barrel jeans walked so that long bloomers could run — or is that a bit of a reach? We can chat about it in the comments.
