I would already have my house decked out in Christmas but I’m feeling good (except for this cold I caught) and we are slowly going to be decorating for Christmas this week. I haven’t done one of these pattern videos in a hot minute but here we are. I love making seamless patterns! If yall are ever in need of one, I’m your gal. Woke up today with an idea… brush mark making, but as a surface pattern design! 🎨 I used my @schimoniart.brushes scarabus brush for its funky horseshoe strokes (i love how unique this brush is!!) then grabbed my 12 black @artphilosophyco watercolor and got to work playing with direction and varying consistency of paint. After a little digital editing in Illustrator, voilà … I have an entry for the @golden.coil additional surprise cover contest! I love bright fussy designs usually, but ironically for my personal planners and folders I tend to lean towards a solid color or simple but bold pattern instead. If you ever find yourself unsure what to paint by the way, mark making and “seeing what your brush can do” is a great exercise to get you started. When I fell pregnant, I could design patterns and worked on commissions But I knew that my time was about to look very different. Quick turnarounds and client back and forth weren’t going to work anymore. I had to ask myself, “How do I hold onto my creative calling in this season?” “How can I earn from my art within the broken routines of motherhood?” Not just when I have time. Not only if someone notices me. So I learned how to license my artwork. Surface pattern design gave me a purpose, seeing my art live a life beyond my studio on fabric, products and packaging. But building an art licensing system gave me permission to hold it all in a season where my daughter needed me more. Artist mama, you can do this. 💜 If you steward the little well, you’ll be amazed how quickly it turns into more than you dreamed.

I started my career in art licensing in 2023 after closing down my last business and within 1 year had grown a thriving, in demand licensing brand (like we’re talking my art was on the shelves at Anthropologie). The reason I was able to find success so quickly is because I had spent the past 15 years of my life learning all the skills and strategies I needed (as an art director and from growing my business to $1M in revenue). I have strategies most artists would never think of. I have insights most artists are never privy to. Top 3 things I would tell any artist looking to level up and break into art licensing: 1️⃣ you have to find a way to get over your fear of rejection. Set a goal for how many NO’s you want to receive. You’re bound to get a few YESES on the way 😊 2️⃣ find an artist or two who has the career you want. The clients, the lifestyle, whatever it is. Do what they do. Learn what they teach. Don’t copy their art ( that will get you nowhere) but copy their strategies. 3️⃣ tell yourself you only have to truly commit to ONE THING - and that is to not give up. Most artists who fail at licensing do so because they can’t stay in it long enough. It’s not easy, it’s very hard. But those who can do it, make it!!! The truth is you'll never feel ready and you'll keep saying "someday". I sat at our kitchen table and taught myself to paint. It wasn't pretty but I loved creating and I was finally listening to what was stirring inside me. If you would have told me then in 2022 that I'd be living out creative dreams I didn't even know were possible I would have pointed to the ugly marks on my cheap watercolor paper and said yeah right. I walked down the aisle of a fabric store, saw a beautiful piece of fabric, and thought “wait… someone DESIGNED this? That’s a job?!” And then I couldn’t stop thinking about it. People told me it wasn’t realistic. That I needed connections. That without an art degree, I’d never make it work. But I kept going anyway. One tiny step at a time. Eighteen months later, I signed my first fabric licensing deal. (I cried. My mom cried. It was a whole thing.) Today? I exhibited at the world’s largest art licensing trade show. Published Pattern Magazine. Built a creative business that lets me work from home and be present for my family. All because I didn’t listen to the people who said it wasn’t possible. Here’s how it works: – divide your page into 4 equal squares – draw onto the inner edges of each square (this is what makes it connect later) – rearrange the squares so the edges swap positions – fill in the gaps that appear in the center – repeat the process until you have a seamless pattern I feel like this could live beyond the page, I’m just not sure where yet.
