RAIn the Talmud Beitzah it says that a person’s sustenance for the entire year is decreed from Rosh Hashanah to Rosh Hashanah. In other words, how much one will earn is spiritually “budgeted” at the start of the year.
But the same passage adds an important exception: money spent on Shabbat, festivals, and Torah education for children is not included in that fixed decree. The idea is that these expenses aren’t treated as ordinary spending — they’re considered investments in mitzvot — so if someone increases their spending for Shabbat meals, candles, or honoring the day, Heaven reimburses it, so to speak.
