REEach day on set required makeup that took three to four hours to complete and 21 prosthetics, courtesy of Academy Award winner Kazu Hiro, to make Dwayne Johnson look like Mark Kerr. Johnson worked with a voice coach to turn his speech into that of Kerr's, a soft, tender voice. The result has been a performance that critics have lauded as one of Johnson's best, who looks almost unrecognizable on the big screen. "I've never worked harder, and we like hard work, it's what we all like to do," Johnson told ESPN during the roundtable. "But man, I had never worked harder for a role."

This A24 picture released in the fall of 2025, debuting at the Venice International Film Festival. The film is written and directed by Benny Safdie and marks the first solo directorial feature of his career.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as Mark Kerr, a pioneer of Mixed Martial Arts and one of the original figures of the UFC. Mark’s addiction and ego collide repeatedly throughout the story, both fueled by institutional neglect and personal rejection. His eventual separation from these destructive habits grant him a quieter sense of peace and a different understanding of success.
Kerr was a physically imposing heavyweight, standing 6'1" to 6'3" some reports suggest he competed at times around 270 to 280 pounds. Johnson gained approximately 30 pounds of muscle, completed 12 weeks of MMA training, and underwent four hours of daily prosthetic application in order to play the role.
Josh Safdie, Benny’s brother, made a similar solo debut with Marty Supreme, A24’s 2025 holiday release. Both films center on athlete protagonists who become consumed by their craft in the pursuit of greatness, and both films do it with a great soundtrack.
What emerges is a clear understanding of the Safdies as a unit. Their shared work succeeds because it thrives on tension, chaos, character, and restraint in equal measure. Without that creative counterbalance, something vital feels different. Both solo efforts are compelling, but they ultimately underscore just how essential their partnership has been to their most resonant work.

FIBenny Safdie said that he was editing ‘THE SMASHING MACHINE’ when Christopher Nolan unexpectedly called him for a part in ‘THE ODYSSEY.’
“I was in the middle of editing when Chris Nolan called me and was like, “How’s your body?” And I was like, “What do you mean? Like, how’s it holding up in the edit?” And he says, “No, I want you to be in this and you have to be in better shape.” And I was like, OK, I have to do that now.”
Recalling his experience filming the project, Safdie said, “It was a remarkable, unbelievable thing to be a part of and to witness. It was an amazing experience. I couldn’t explain the scale of it, you wouldn’t believe me…”
The film will mark Safdie’s second collaboration with Nolan after ‘OPPENHEIMER’ in 2023, with unconfirmed rumors suggesting that he will be playing Agamemnon.
