Whooo was at our meeting today? Byron Wortham, cofounder of Holly’s Nest Wildlife Rescue, and two of his owl rescues, that’s who! Byron shared the moving story of how he and his wife started the rescue foundation to honor the life of his daughter, Holly, who died in an auto accident at the age of 18 in 2004. Their mission is to nurture orphaned and abandoned animals until they can be released back into the wild. Holly's Nest took in just over 1,700 animals last year, including 8 eagles and over 100 raptors of different varieties. They are also the largest deer rescue in the state. A big thank you to Byron for a wonderful presentation and for the work he and his wife do to rehabilitate animals. @hollysnestanimalrescue

Some of our patients are louder than others 😅 This Barred Owl (patient 26-68) has a lot to say and makes sure we hear it loud and clear! This is a defensive call letting us know to back off and likely to warn other nearby animals that there are predators (humans) near by. P.S. we are handling this vocal bird near that ground as a safety measure to itself. Often times raptors come in with broken wings and cannot fly. In order to make sure they don't take any falls and further injure themsevles, we will often handle them very close to, or on the ground when pulling them out of enclosure to administer medications or to clean up. #westshorewildlifecenter #wildliferehabilitation #inspirecoexistence #barredowl #owl #owlcall

Our first baby raptor of 2026 is a Great Horned Owl! This new baby still has an egg tooth, a temporary structure at the tip of the beak, designed to help a chick break out of its shell. This baby took a fall from a tree, and was brought to us for an examination of health. Fortunately, the baby owl has no wounds or fractures, and is a perfect candidate for renesting! Because this is a healthy baby animal, we will be putting this baby back in the nest with its other sibling so that it can continue to be raised by Mom and Dad. #owls #raptors #wildlife #wildliferehabilitation

Remember our ‘early bird’ nestling Eastern Screech Owl (26-26)? Recently, another orphaned nestling Eastern Screech Owl (26-147) was transferred to our center from CROW Clinic! The two owlets took to each other quickly and are moving through the rehabilitation process together. While wild parents are always the best caregivers, wildlife rehabilitation centers are able to step in as a last resort when renesting efforts aren’t possible. @crowclinic reached out to us to discuss the possibility of transferring their nestling screech owl patient to join the one currently in care so the owlets could be raised together. Since both owls are orphaned, it is essential they be raised alongside other members of their own species allowing them to learn natural behaviors from each other. These two new friends will continue recieving supportive care and feeds until they’re ready to move to an outdoor enclosure. Once outside, they’ll progress through the release criteria as they grow, including live insect prey testing, to ensure they can hunt independently and thrive in the wild. We are grateful to have statewide wildlife rehabilitation and conservation partners equally committed to the best interest of wild patients in care! Thank you to both teams who dedicate endless amounts of time and energy to saving Florida’s native and migratory wildlife!

Great Horned Owl On a cloudy afternoon, mom arrived with dinner for the owlets. Captured from outside the restricted area, without disturbing the owls or their habitat, at West Matheson Hammock Park. At this moment, the park is closed for restoration. Hopefully the project is completed smoothly, but a crucial part of this process is respecting the closure. Trespassing during restoration puts wildlife, habitat, and the work being done at risk. Ethical wildlife photography and birding mean honoring boundaries even when no one is watching.

They held it overnight in hopes to release it back but apparently has an injury that prevents it from flying. Possibly a clavicle fracture. It will be going to LSU this afternoon.
