This little thing is KILLING you acceleration!‼️ Stop kicking your HEEL UP! The goal of this drill is to have something tangible to think about when keeping the heel low. This is designed for non track athletes who struggle cycling their legs on acceleration. Practice a toe drag to reinforce keeping your food low to get into your negative step QUICKER!✅ #speedtraining #athletetraining #sprinttechnique #acceleration #performancetraining

I ran 45.1 and 20.6 only a year after struggling to run 46mid and 21low. So a lot of people ask, HOW can I make those kinds of jumps. 1, 2 or even 3 seconds within a season. Here’s what actually made me explode out of the blocks: 1.I started using drills that actually transfer. Not just drills that look cool, but ones that force your body into the correct positions and teach you how to apply force. Heavy sled pushes and pulls were huge because they teach you to stay low and keep pushing instead of popping up. 3-4 Hurdle hops straight into an acceleration taught me how to combine stiffness, power, and projection in one movement. I also love doing a short drill sequence for about 10 meters and then immediately going into a few explosive pushes so the pattern carries over into real sprinting. Wall runs are underrated too. 2.stopped trying so hard. This sounds backwards, but tension is literally braking force. When you’re straining, clenching everything, forcing every step, your nervous system slows down and your movement gets stiff. You’re basically fighting yourself while trying to sprint. What helped me was thinking “push hard, stay loose.” The fastest accelerations I’ve had didn’t feel like chaos… they felt powerful and smooth at the same time. If it feels frantic, you’re probably wasting speed. 3.I learned to PUSH, not step. Acceleration is not about quick feet. It’s about producing force horizontally. Imagine pushing a heavy sled across the track or watching a plane take off. It doesn’t jump into the air instantly. It rolls, builds pressure, builds power, then suddenly it’s flying. If you try to “run fast” immediately, you pop upright, your foot lands too far in front, and now you’re braking instead of accelerating. Each step should feel like you’re driving the ground backward to send your body forward. Long powerful pushes, not little tapping steps. When this clicked for me, my entire first 30 meters changed, and suddenly my top speed improved too without even targeting it directly. #trackandfield #tracknation #sprinting #blockstarts #acceleration

Acceleration isn’t driven by one muscle, it’s driven by impulse. Performance during acceleration is dominated by stance phase mechanics, specifically the ability to generate large propulsive forces while minimizing braking forces. The plantarflexors, especially soleus and gastroc, contribute most to the ground force impulse that drives the body forward. Gastrocnemius plays a major role in accelerating the COM forward, while soleus provides critical support & vertical impulse. The hamstrings, particularly the biceps femoris long head (BFLH), contribute substantially to propulsive impulse and are strongly linked to early acceleration performance. These systems must work together, ankle, knee, and hip, to generate and direct force efficiently. That’s why acceleration is a coordination problem. This is exactly what I teach in Speed Kills. It’s my most comprehensive resource on acceleration, max velocity, and how to develop speed. 80 pages AND a full program. If you’re no longer a competitive athlete but still want to sprint, jump, and train for power safely, Strength X Speed is the perfect entry point. It builds explosiveness without requiring advanced sprint experience. For athletes who want individualized structure, I also offer custom remote programming and phone consultations. Force = mass x acceleration. With all other things remaining equal, increase force to accelerate faster. @kalenwalker13 is a great example of applying incredible amounts of force in a short period of time. Increases in mass (body weight) will slow you down unless you counteract the increase in mass with a greater increase in force. Having ample amounts of sprint and plyo work in your program is essential for speed improvements. Lift heavy to increase force production. Sprint, jump snd move things quickly so you can apply that force fast. #acceleration #sprinttraining #forceproduction #strengthandconditioning
