I have in the past talking about how the phrase “I love you” is an American phrase. I never grew up hearing or saying “I love you.” Yet I grew up in a loving home, filled with love and compassion. Other words that illustrate love were used but not a literal phrase like that. Love was shown through action. #ifyouknowyouknow
In my experience, the phrase “I love you” wasn’t really something that was used in the Armenian language, in a non-romantic context, the way it is frequently used in English.
It was fascinating to hear how many of you— how many other cultures feel the same way.
But now of course the more Americanized I have become it is a phrase I use with my children and the people in my life often- causally and naturally— without even thinking.

DUPennsylvania Dutch 🇩🇪
Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsilfaanisch) is a dialect of German exclusive to the Midlands, particularly around Pennsylvania & Ohio. The name Dutch comes from the Americanization of “Deutsch”, the Germans’ endonym. It is spoken by the Pennsylvania Germans, an ethno-cultural group descended from America’s first German migrants, but is culturally associated with the Amish. There are ~237,000 speakers.
Pennsylvania was founded in 1681. It offered the most religious freedom & tolerance of the Thirteen Colonies, making it a major destination for European immigrants of uncommon, marginalized or persecuted faiths. Most were Anabaptists from various German territories; they became a plurality in the state, developing an offshoot German-American identity within their bucolic closely-knit communities, birthing the Pennsylvania Dutch. As America grew & won its independence, they diverged into 2 groups: the Fancy Dutch who tout their German heritage but integrated into mainstream Anglo society & the Plain Dutch who adhere to Anabaptist churches (i.e. Amish, Old Order Mennonites) and eschewed the outside world.
Boasting a demographic advantage, the Pennsylvania Dutch maintained their language despite assimilation efforts.
Pennsylvania Dutch is an Anglicized variety of Palatine German. It is derived from many 18th-century German dialects (mainly Palatine) which merged/leveled during America’s colonial period, preserving archaisms while absorbing English influences. Pronunciation has been heavily Anglicized. Grammar resembles simplified Old German. It contains an extensive vocabulary of English words as well as archaic German terms. It is spoken by both Fancy & Plain Dutch - but namely the latter. Once a common street language even in the Midland’s cities, Pennsylvania German has receded to secluded Amish communities.
Amid WWI & WWII, the US government suppressed all languages other than English; German was specifically targeted as an enemy tongue. Speaking it was harshly discouraged & English-only education was enforced, decimating the number of German speakers by the 1950s.
Today, Pennsylvania Dutch survives across the rural Midlands.
