How do you keep your bees hydrated? 🐝 💦 We used to use large plant pot saucers filled with rocks and water - but in this hot weather, these saucers dry out very quickly! We were tempted to get a bird bath (still an option) but without a dam or any other body of water in the yard, this was the next best option: Enter the 3.8L gravity feeding dog water bowl! Although the bowl is smaller than the saucers we previously used, this will remain consistently full of water regardless of the weather (or my laziness!) Harvesting honey isn’t always plain sailing... During one of our harvests a honey frame broke, we put it on top of a nuc and within seconds our bees, (and a few wasps) arrived to clean up every drop of honey from the comb. Nothing went to waste! Unexpected moments happen, but they highlight an important truth: keep apiaries and equipment clean. Clean beekeeping matters. Good practice in the apiary means: keeping all equipment clean avoiding honey spills working calmly and methodically Why? Because any sticky/ sweet spillages in the apiary rings the dinner bell for: Wasps European hornets and possibly, even invites unwanted attention from asian hornets (yellow legged) a serious threat to honeybees and other important pollinators! Spilled honey attracts wasps, wasps attract hornets, and hornets attract more hornets, and suddenly you’ve got a full blown insect festival in your apiary. Great for them. Terrible for the bees. The tree #colony is settled in. I gave them frames of #honey, Hive Alive fondant, 2:1 syrup with Hive Alive supplement, and frames of #bee bread. I put them in this specific #hive for good reason. This hive, set up as a #baithive, has caught #swarms every year! I put out multiple #beehives in my #apiaries , and this one in particular has been chosen every year. So I figured, since the bees like it enough to choose it over any other bait hive, I would put these beauties in it for #winter. They are still going to need a lot of work and a lot of maintenance going forward. I did not see any #brood in this colony, but that’s ok because they stop #laying this time of year. I did not see the #queen, but I did see them #fanning when I was doing the #cutout, so I’m pretty confident that I did get the queen. (You can see them fanning in the video.) What I found very interesting is that they had no #honey. None at all to get them through winter. We have been in a #dearth since August here on Long Island, so it was almost meant to be that the tree came down so these bees could be #saved, and at least given a chance to make it through winter. Too many times people say just leave them, or just let swarms fly, or whatever. It’s like seeing a cow in the woods and saying , “Oh gee, look at the cow, it looks so nice and happy there. Just let it be. But the cow needs the farmer to take care of it, to feed it, to give it medications and shelter. The cow may look like it’s doing good, #frolicking in the woods, but if it doesn’t get the care that it needs, it’s going to die. And like cows, bees are #agricultural animals. They’re livestock and they need care. If the bees were left in the tree, they would’ve just died pretty quickly. It’s getting cold here, and this #colony had no food to help them generate heat to keep themselves warm. They would have died without intervention, (and a cherry picker)! I’ll be checking them on the next warm day to try to get my eyes on the queen. Strawberries were grown throughout Ga za, though much farmland has been destroyed, and strawberries are now a rarity.
