We love the progression this compilation shows of expressive language development. Did you know that cooing is different from babbling and that babbling has different stages? 🗣 Cooing comes first, typically between months 2 and 4. A coo usually consists of a single-syllable, open-vowel sound, like, “ahh,” or “ohh,” that requires no rounding of the lips. 👄 By around 6 months, your baby will graduate from cooing to babbling. Here are the three stages of babbling: ✨ 1. Chain babbling is a consistent string of single-consonant and single-vowel sounds like, “babababa,” or “aaaaaaaah.” 🗣️How can you support it? Smile and respond with similar babbling sounds. This tells your baby that their attempts at communication are important! ✨2. Babbling double-consonant sounds, like “baba” or “mama,” is an advanced skill that requires better breathing control and lip, jaw, and tongue coordination. 🗣️How can you support it? Say real double-consonant words, such as, “bye-bye,” as your dog goes outside. Also, imitate your child’s babbling chains but shorten them. So, if they say, “bababababa,” respond with, “baba.” ✨3. Babbling to people involves a back-and-forth with you or another individual as if a real conversation is taking place. 🗣️How can you support it? Respond as though you know exactly what your little one is saying, with comments like, “Oh, really? I can’t believe it!” Keep our child developmental experts at your fingertips—follow and add us to favorites. ✨ #Babbling #LoveveryBaby #HereWithYou #BabyBabbles

Trying to help baby learn to babble? Here’s how to do it. Make sure you are down on their level, face-to-face. First, imitate baby’s sounds. You want to get some back-and-forth turntaking going, so you may stay at this stage for a little while. Then model simple syllables, like dadada, mamama, or bababa. Model once, then pause for what will seem like too long! If baby imitates you, imitate them right back again and keep it going! If not, you may have to back up to imitating what baby says before you model syllables again. The most important part of this is that you’re having fun and you give baby enough time to respond in the way that they’re able at each moment!#babytalk #babbling #earlyintervention #speech #newparents #speechtherapy #grandparents #slp #parentingtips

🌟 Comment “Webinar” to learn more about your child’s communication development in our FREE 45-minute webinar! 💕Your baby’s first year is about so much more than eating and sleeping—they’re also busy building the foundation for speech and language! Each stage of sound-making is like a stepping stone on the path to talking. 🍼 0–2 months – Reflexive Sounds Crying, sneezing, burping, and sucking—these early sounds are how babies first use their voice. 💬 2–4 months – Cooing & Gooing Sweet vowel-like sounds (like “oooh” and “ahhh”) start to appear, showing your baby’s growing control of their voice. 🙉 4–6 months – Vocal Play This is when babies get playful with their sounds—think squeals, growls, and experimenting with pitch and volume! 👶 6–10 months – Babbling Now comes the fun “bababa” and “dadada” stage, as your little one begins stringing together real consonant-vowel combos. ❤️ 10–12 months – Jargon & First Words Your baby’s babbling starts to sound more like conversation with rhythm and tone—and before long, you’ll hear those magical first words. 🙌 By 24 months – Word Combinations Two-word phrases (“more milk,” “dada go”) show your child is building early sentences and communication skills. Every giggle, squeal, and babble is an exciting step toward talking—cheer your little one on each step of the way! 💕 #speechdevelopment #babbling #firstwords #slptips #newparenttips #vocaldevelopment #languagelearning

✨ Babbling is a familiar word, but what exactly is it and why is it important? ✨ 👶🏽 Babbling typically begins when your baby is about 6-9 months old. This is the stage most commonly thought of as being associated with language development (I told you it starts early!!) 🥰 Your baby will start adding consonants to the vowel sounds they were already saying. Given most real words are made up of consonants and vowels, babbling is so important for helping babies use real words successfully. 👉🏻 Tip: Be quick to determine your baby’s babbling as attempts at real words. If they say “ma-ma-ma-ma”, praise your baby and say yes “mama”, pointing to you (or their mama). The praise and attention really encourages babies to continue to babble (Full disclosure: They’re not saying “mama” but they will soon if you try the above!!) You can try this with “da-da-da” (dada) and “ba-ba-ba” (ball/bubbles/bear/bottle) etc! 💬 You will notice as your baby moves towards 10 months old, they become more elaborate with their sounds, and can sound like they’re having a full blown conversation! Chat with your baby to encourage back and forth interactions. 3️⃣ ways to encourage babbling: ◻️ Get face-to-face and copy their babbling sounds. ◻️◻️ Use the mirror to babble to them and pause to give them an opportunity to babble back- copy one another’s sounds. ◻️◻️◻️ Babble on a phone or pretend phone and then pass the phone tp baby to see if they copy you! ❤️ This is just one of my tips from dozens in my “First Words” course.
