She thought we broke the machine the first time she sewed with vinyl. 
The stitches skipped. 
The fabric got stuck. 
And it felt like no matter what she did, the vinyl dragged right over the needle plate—especially around the bobbin window. Turns out… that’s just what vinyl does. 😅 It sticks to the presser foot and needle plate because it doesn’t glide like cotton or canvas. But here’s what helped us: ✨ She added gift wrap tissue paper underneath ✨ 
Just a scrap leftover from a birthday gift. She placed it between the vinyl and the machine bed—and suddenly everything moved smoothly. The vinyl stopped sticking. 
The stitches behaved. 
And she finally finished our first bag without pulling our hair out. 😅 🧵 Now she always keep these tips in mind: * Layer tissue paper under vinyl when sewing. It helps feed it through. * Switch to a fresh needle—vinyl dulls them fast.
(She likes microtex or leather needles for a cleaner stitch!) * Use a non-stick/Teflon foot if you have one—but even a regular foot works with this trick. * Tear the tissue off after—it comes off clean. Using flimsy fabric or the wrong interfacing Your bag needs structure! Skipping interfacing—or using the wrong type—is the fastest way to end up with a sad, slouchy bag. Fusible woven and fleece? Total game changers. 🙌 2. Rushing through the prep work I know you want to get to the fun part (sewing!), but skipping careful cutting and interfacing prep causes all the headaches later. Clean prep = clean results. 3. Thinking seam allowances don’t really matter This one’s gold. In bagmaking, seam allowance is the structure. It’s not just about fitting pieces together—it literally affects how your bag sits and stands. Even being off by ⅛” can throw everything off. I'm a firm believer that pressing is 50% of good sewing and you can really tell when someone skips this step. Pressing isn’t just about removing wrinkles. Here's why pressing helps so much ... It improves your accuracy as pressing between each construction step helps seams lay flat, reduces bulk, and makes pieces fit together more precisely. Gives you a professional Finish → A properly pressed project looks crisp and polished, while skipping pressing often makes projects look “homemade.” Ease of Sewing → Pressing sets shape into the fabric, especially when working with curves, darts, pleats, and tricky seams. Essentially pressing takes your projects from homemade to handmade ✅ If you want to improve the level of sewing, the first step is to learn how to press, and press at each step. 🔖 save this post to refer to later If you’re not familiar with using waxed canvas here’s our top tips for starting: - Use a rotary cutter for cutting - Use an awl instead of a pen to mark the fabric - Use a seam roller or even press with your fingers(!) instead of using an iron on seams - Use clips instead of pins- any holes will be left in the fabric - No need for interfacing or stabilisers (though some patterns and your preference may call for stabilisers) - If you do iron your fabric/ bag make sure to put between parchment paper and don’t use steam. Always test a scrap first too! - Clean your machine after using waxed canvas, as the wax can clog things up a bit - Use a wax bar to rewax your bag when it needs it!
