JOA sad day in Canberra - the Big Splash slides have been found too far gone to be repaired 😞
These slides are iconic and one of a kind. It's what made Big Splash a cherished and loved place for people all over the region. It's formed core memories and been a classic place to go with friends and family. They will leave a big hole in the heart of many Canberrans.
I met with representatives of the water park yesterday and the tldr is they want to redevelop the site BUT keep it accessible to the public and for recreational facilities including a pool and water play.
There will be no rezoning. The Greens got every single ACT Parliamentarian to agree to this and the owner is apparently not considering a rezone at all in their plans.
We also got the ACT Labor Government to agree to share information with the community. What's alarming is they were shown ideas around the same time they were told by the owner Big Splash would open mid-November.
Whatever happens to Big Splash, it MUST be done in genuine co-design with the community, so the waterpark's future comes from the people who will use it - not just developers.

CDWe closed out summer with a BIG splash!
In partnership with @lacityparks, @laparks.playla, and @iswimla.lacityparks, our office threw a splashy pool party at the VNSO Aquatic Center in Sherman Oaks over Labor Day weekend! Families and friends of all ages were welcome to swim, kayak, paddleboard, and even try their luck at the inflatable obstacle course. With the help of our City staff, we also served up free food for everyone— who doesn’t love a good burger after a good swim?
Of course, it wouldn’t be a CD4 event if there also weren’t a way to receive neighborhood support! Our Field Deputies were on standby ready to answer any community questions and, with the help of our community partners, we made this fun event meaningful with free resources, goodies, and games.
The highlight of the event, however, was a live performance by @celestialvoicemusic, a local SFV band that had us jamming out to their rendition of “Santaria” by Sublime.
