🐦 It’s World Migratory Bird Day! Migratory birds play a vital role in ecosystems, but climate change is threatening their habitats - 30% of breeding species are in decline. The 🇪🇺 #LIFEProject - LIFE4AquaticWarbler is restoring habitats across 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇱🇹Lithuania, 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇺🇦 Ukraine to protect one of Europe’s rarest songbirds. To support this effort, the #CopernicusEU Climate Change Service (C3S) provides ERA5 reanalysis data to understand how climate variations affect bird migration - helping inform policy makers, engage birdwatchers, and protect biodiversity. #WMBD2025 #EUSpace #worldmigratorybirdday

Large flocks of migratory birds have reportedly appeared in the skies over Israel. Observers say the birds briefly disrupted radar systems used to monitor airspace. Wildlife experts describe the event as an unusual but natural mass migration. Such large bird flocks can sometimes appear on radar screens similar to aircraft signals. The phenomenon has drawn widespread attention on social media during the ongoing regional tensions. Experts say bird migration across the Middle East often peaks during seasonal travel routes. Sandhill Cranes reach their peak abundance at migratory stopover points on the Great Plains. The early spring gathering of Sandhills at Audubon’s @RoweSanctuary and other sites in Nebraska’s Platte River Valley Platte River is among the greatest wildlife spectacles on the continent, with over a quarter of a million birds present at one time. But fall is also a fantastic time to seek out these beautiful birds since their migration is spread out more evenly across the country. You can follow the Sandhill Crane's—and other migratory birds'—journeys with the Bird Migration Explorer by Audubon and partners. Guess who's back?! Shagoie Watha and Uwohali are back in the public view! The two bald eagles had been behind the scenes for a few months for their protection due to cases of avian flu found in North Carolina earlier this year. They can now both be seen perched in their habitat on the marsh boardwalk. The two rescued bald eagles are both non-releasable and are unable to fly due to wing injuries. While the two female eagles are expected to continue to be viewable from their public habitat this summer, Aquarium staff will take all precautions this fall during bird migration. #baldeagles

This fall, the Rhode Island Division of Fish and Wildlife, with assistance from The Nature Conservancy, is conducting daily migration surveys from the north light on Block Island. Each fall, millions of birds migrate through New England on their way south for the winter. Many songbirds only migrate at night. As odd as it may seem, there’s a reason to migrate at night! Migration is exhausting, and migrating songbirds must spend their days eating and building up fat reserves. At night, cooler, more stable air conditions are better for long distance flights. It’s also safer to avoid getting eaten by birds of prey, which are mostly active during the day. Migration is complex enough, but for juvenile birds undergoing their very first migration, it’s even tougher! Because of their inexperience, juvenile birds are more apt to make navigational mistakes, usually caused by weather, like crosswinds that can blow them out to sea. To fix these mistakes, many songbirds will make short flights just after sunrise following their overnight migrations. These “morning flights” can be very noticeable in coastal and offshore areas, such as Block Island, where birds are attempting to fly back to land to limit the chances of being swept out to sea on the next leg of their journey. These morning flights offer a unique glimpse into the otherwise invisible migrations of songbirds. By surveying these flights, biologists can better understand bird migration, and the conditions that put them in risky situations. With this information, we can guide regional conservation decisions to limit migration hazards, ensuring safe passage for millions of migrants, both locally and abroad.

At Gozo’s Xwejni Salt Pans, a young Greater Flamingo was shot down in front of tourists. The bird was likely taking a rest from yesterday’s storm. Unfortunately, it fell victim to a hunter who took a shot at it, then loaded it into a vehicle and drove off. “Gozo has become a mecca of illegalities as bad as Miżieb and l-Aħrax and our hope is that the enforcement authorities takes the situation seriously,” BirdLife Malta CEO Mark Sultana stated. “The bird migration season has started and as has happened every year, a number of protected birds – even during closed season – end up being targeted by hunters who disregard the law, and are a far cry from the conservationists or scientists they try to portray themselves to be,” BirdLife Malta Head of Conservation Nicholas Barbara added. BirdLife Malta urges the general public to report any illegalities to the police during the next five months, as hunting season kicks off. BirdLife Malta can also be reached on 2134 7645 or on the emergency (out of office hours) number 7925 5697. What do you make of this? 📹 @birdlife_malta
