Peki genetik test nedir ve kanser sürecinde neden bakılır? Genetik test, kanserin kalıtsal olup olmadığını anlamak için yapılır. Yani aileden geçen bir gen mutasyonu var mı buna bakılır. Özellikle meme kanserinde en çok bilinen genler BRCA1 ve BRCA2 genleridir. Eğer bu genlerde bir mutasyon varsa, hem kişinin ikinci bir kanser geliştirme riski hem de aile bireylerinin riski artabilir. Bu test sonucu tedavi planını da etkileyebilir. Bazı ilaçlar özellikle genetik mutasyonu olan hastalarda daha etkili olabiliyor. Yani bu test sadece bugünü değil, geleceği planlamak için de önemli. We are delighted to be funding Dan and his team @uclifwh to create a tool, called BRCANavigate, to support women in making informed decisions about their health and reducing or monitoring their cancer risk. After seeing my doctor today and getting bloodwork, I found out one of the side effects of Lynparza ( the maintenance drug I am taking ) is a dangerously low white blood cell count. Mine is below 2.5, when it should be at least at 5. For now, it means going home, resting, staying away from people, and pausing Lynparza until we retest on Tuesday along with a PET scan. Where my count is right now puts me at risk for serious infection, including sepsis, so we’re being very careful. This is not how I expected today to go, but here we are. The good news, I have answers as to why I feel so bad. #cancer #chemo #lynparza #chemotherapy #brca #genetics #cancertreatment #hairloss #cancerjourney

Social media and complete strangers on the internet helped me heal in ways I could have never imagined, because at the end of the day, we are all in this together - the fight to cure *all* cancers. My friends are getting married. They’re having babies. They’re planning weddings, nurseries, and futures. And I’m having cancer. Next week, I have an appointment to talk about removing my ovaries. And gradually, the reality hits a little harder: I may never have the future I once imagined. It’s a strange kind of whiplash — watching life move forward in such beautiful, ordinary ways, while mine is measured in appointments, scans, and treatment plans. I am genuinely happy for them. And at the same time, I’m grieving the version of this chapter I thought I would be living. Cancer doesn’t just interrupt your body. It interrupts your timeline, and your future. Some days, that’s the hardest part — not just the treatment, but the quiet reckoning with how different life can become, so quickly. But this is still my life. Still unfolding. Just differently. Both sides of my family have faced cancer — breast, brain, pancreas, and more. Because of that history, I took the BRCA test. It’s a simple blood or saliva test that looks for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which can greatly increase your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. I found out I was BRCA1 positive. That knowledge shaped some of the biggest decisions of my life, including an elective double mastectomy. At the time, it was about prevention and taking control. Looking back now, I also believe my genetics and family history played a large role in my own cancer diagnosis. Sharing this is vulnerable, but I know how important it is to talk about — because genetics aren’t just abstract science, they’re part of our stories, our families, and sometimes our hardest choices. #brca #brca1 #brca2 #mastectomy #cancer #ovariancancer #genetics
