PAThe British didn’t create the caste system in India—but they masterfully used and intensified it to maintain control. When the British East India Company and later the Crown ruled India, they realized one powerful truth: a divided society is easier to govern than a united one.
Through policies like caste-based census classifications (starting 1871), they rigidly documented and froze identities that were earlier more flexible. Communities were labeled, ranked, and often stereotyped—turning social differences into permanent divisions. The British also promoted the idea of “martial races”, favoring certain castes and communities in the army while excluding others, creating imbalance and loyalty towards the colonial rulers.
In administration and education, they often gave preferential treatment to specific groups, deepening mistrust among Indians. Instead of uniting against colonial exploitation, Indians were pushed into competing identities—caste over country.
This was a classic example of the British strategy of “Divide and Rule.” By amplifying caste distinctions, they weakened collective resistance, delayed national unity, and ensured their dominance for nearly two centuries.
The legacy of these policies still echoes in modern India. Understanding this history is crucial—not to assign blame, but to realize how external forces can exploit internal divisions.
A divided India was their strength. A united India became their downfall.
