Raising baby chicks doesn’t have to be hard or expensive! 🐣
I've found a brooder setup that I'm very excited to try out and share my experiences with, and it’s so simple, using a puppy play pen from Kmart. I really love Kmart lol.
Here’s why I think it will works so well.
First of all its going to be easy to clean.
The open design makes it super easy to wipe down and change bedding. No more tricky corners or heavy lifting.
It's super light and easy to move around.
Need to move it outside for sunshine or closer to the heat lamp? No problem! This playpen folds up and is super light, so you can carry it and move it anywhere.
The XL size is big enough for plenty of chicks to run, jump, and flap their wings and even do ZOOMIES!! It keeps them happy and healthy as they grow.
The sturdy sides keep your chicks safe and secure while letting air in. You can even watch them play without opening it up.
Its very customisable, you can add everything the babies need! A heat lamp, food and water, and even little perches for them to practice roosting.
Now that I think about it, I'll need to make another trip down to Kmart to have a scout around for some perches!
By putting puppy pee pads down it will not only help to soak up all the mess and make cleanup even faster, it will help give the little babes a non slip surface to help with their footing.
This setup is so easy, and your chicks will love it!

DIBuilding a chick brooder doesn’t have to be expensive! 🐣💡
I made this DIY brooder using a 27-gallon storage container, hardware cloth, and zip ties—super budget-friendly and easy to put together! It’s a great alternative to store-bought brooders and provides plenty of space for growing chicks.
✅ Why I love this setup:
✔️ Affordable—costs way less than pre-made brooders
✔️ Secure—keeps chicks safe while allowing airflow
✔️ Simple to clean and modify as chicks grow
🐥 How much space do chicks need? (There’s no one right answer here, so let me know how much space you give your chicks!)
➡️ 0-4 weeks: At least ½ sq. ft. per chick
➡️ 4-8 weeks: At least 1 sq. ft. per chick
➡️ 8+ weeks: At least 2-3 sq. ft. per chick before moving to the coop
🐥 Tip: Make sure to cover the top! Chicks start testing their wings sooner than you think.

ABDIY Tote Chicken Brooder.
This brooder is inexpensive and can last years. We have a shed with two of these right now, full of chicks. one brooder is ready to be split up now. The other will be in just a few days. The warmer weather has been incredible, but still not quite warm enough for these little ones that are far from fully feathered. We have 25 pullets and 30 meat chicks hanging out, waiting for their turn on grass. Soon our American Bresse chicks will be filling these brooders, once the others go on pasture. We also use these for our rabbitry events occasionally! Seeing brooders makes me even more excited for Spring!

BHThis brooder box has changed the chick game for me!
It was big enough for our 17 babies with room to spare, though now we’re down to 10 babies after some already went to their new home!
Since we got our chicks, all of the Brahmas were getting picked on. I’m not sure why it was only them, but I was able to put the divider in, and they’re all healing up! Unfortunately, once the pecking starts and the girls see red, they’ll keep pecking until any wounded spots heal. Honestly, really grateful to my yesterday self for thinking ahead for my today self on the divider 🙌🏼

BEChick brooders need cleaning too ✨🐥
I’ve had this small animal cage as a brooder setup for 4 years now. It’s perfect as a starter cage for baby chickens and, if you only have a few like I do, they can stay in this cage until they’re coop ready in just 8 weeks.

TAMost baby chick losses don’t happen randomly.
They happen because of a few early mistakes no one warns you about.
Here are 3 mistakes I see new chicken owners make in the brooder phase 👇
1️⃣ Improper heating
Despite what you’ll hear online, warming plates are often not sufficient heat sources for baby chicks—especially in the first couple weeks.
Chicks need true, consistent heat, and week one matters more than most people realize.
2️⃣ Using the wrong bedding
Cedar and cypress shavings can cause respiratory issues in chicks.
Pine shavings are the safer, proven option for the brooder.
3️⃣ Ignoring pasty butt
Pasty butt is common in the first two weeks and needs to be removed.
I’ve found the easiest way is gently running the chick’s bottom under warm water, then drying them well before putting them back.
I made these mistakes so you don’t have to.
