A developer has released RuView (also known as WiFi DensePose) on GitHub, an open-source project that uses existing WiFi signals and Channel State Information (CSI) to perform real-time human sensing without cameras or wearables. It tracks full-body poses (like 17 keypoints), detects breathing rates (6-30 BPM), measures heart rates (40-120 BPM), and enables through-wall detection up to several meters using signal reflections and scattering off the body. The system runs efficiently with cheap hardware like a few ESP32 nodes (around $50 total) for multi-angle coverage, processes data rapidly in Rust (up to 54,000 frames/sec), and includes a disaster-response mode called WiFi-Mat for locating survivors under rubble and assessing injuries. While impressive and fully open-source with working code, it has sparked privacy concerns as a proof-of-concept for non-optical surveillance, building on prior academic research like Carnegie Mellon’s work.
