Mastering composition is the best way to turn a random phone snap into a professional-looking photograph by intentionally organizing everything inside your frame. These are the most common composition techniques:
1. The Rule of Thirds
Divide your frame into a 3 x 3 grid and place your subject along the lines or at the intersections. This avoids the static feel of a perfectly centered subject, creating a more balanced and engaging image that feels natural to the eye.
2. The Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio (approximately 1.618:1) is a mathematical proportion often found in nature that creates a sense of organic harmony. In photography, it is often applied via the Phi Grid or the Fibonacci Spiral, which leads the viewer’s eye in a curved path toward the focal point, resulting in a composition that feels more sophisticated and fluid than the Rule of Thirds.
3. Leading Lines
Use natural or man-made lines—like a winding path, a fence, or a shoreline—to direct the viewer’s gaze toward your subject. These lines create a sense of movement and depth, effectively “pulling” the audience into the story of the photo.
4. Framing
By using elements like overhanging branches, windows, or buildings to surround your subject, you create a “frame within a frame.” This technique adds layers to the image and ensures the viewer’s attention remains locked on the focal point.

RAThe art of composition 📸
I try to follow these framing/composition rules to a certain extent when I’m filming. However there are some shots where you can absolutely break these rules. As everyone says “they are just guidelines”.
I end up using these rules the most when I am in the editing stage and I want one shot to easily fall into the next. For example, I usually mark the point/subject that the eye is focused on, using the rules, I then try to make sure the following shot also has the subject in the same position. Sometimes this isn’t necessary, but it’s a good technique to make sure the viewers/audiences eye isn’t fighting for what to look at next.
