That’s what the local guide, Huaman, muttered when we were forced to halt our hike this afternoon. I thought he was reciting poetry until I looked down at the trail. We hadn't been stopped by a landslide or a fallen tree, but by a traffic jam of Iris ambulans, or "Traveler’s Bulbs".
It was a surreal sight: a chaotic, stumbling procession of what looked like heavy, purple-green flower buds, marching on spindly insect legs. They were moving with a desperate sort of energy, likely migrating to higher altitudes to chase the retreating moisture. But the real spectacle happened when one of the stragglers simply gave up.
Right at my feet, an exhausted specimen stopped and collapsed. In an instant, the tight, waxy layers of its "bud" sprang open, revealing a magnificent, complex interior of violet, pink, and yellow petals. It wasn't dying; it was solar-charging. By exposing its vast internal surface area to the sun, the creature rapidly gathers thermal energy to fuel its journey. Huaman says they are the spirits of restless ancestors looking for a place to settle. Watching the "flower" panting silently in the dust, a riot of color against the brown earth, I decided to give them the right of way.
