Its symmetry allows the molecules to pack very efficiently, which leads to sharp, layered crystal structures. What fascinates me is that this strict molecular order gives rise, during crystallization, to fluid, organic forms. It's called supercooling. Pure water without impurities can stay liquid down to minus 48°C. It just needs a nucleation point to crystallize: a dust particle, air bubble, or micro-crack. A tap creates a shockwave that triggers it. Crystallization cascades: each new crystal releases heat, but neighboring molecules restructure faster than the heat can warm them. The bottle freezes top-down because that's where micro-bubbles concentrate. Clouds are made of the same supercooled droplets. These specimens are not cut or polished by humans; instead, they develop their striking geometric shapes through a natural crystallization process within a host rock of soft, light-colored marl (a mixture of clay and limestone). As seen in the footage, the surrounding matrix is so malleable that the crystals can often be extracted by hand or with minimal tools, revealing the high-metallic, mirror-like luster that earned iron pyrite (FeS_{2}) the nickname "Fool's Gold." The formation of these perfect cubes is a result of the cubic crystal system, where iron and sulfur atoms arrange themselves in a highly symmetrical lattice under specific hydrothermal conditions. Millions of years ago, mineral-rich fluids saturated the sediment, and as the environment stabilized, the pyrite precipitated out, growing layer by layer to form sharp edges and right angles. While they may look like man-made dice, the fine parallel lines, or striations, often found on the cube faces are definitive proof of their natural growth.
