What no one talks about is that when you’re the default parent… you truly never get a break. And let’s be honest, the default parent is almost always the mom. Even when both parents are home. Even on the weekends. Diapers. Getting dressed. Breakfast. Playtime. Comfort. Bedtime. You’re the first call for everything. And of course it’s amazing to feel loved, wanted, needed. But let’s also acknowledge how exhausting it can be. If you’re the default parent, I see you. 🤍 #momlife #mentalload #mentalloadofmotherhood #mommentalhealth

Being the default parent isn’t a title we seek, but often one that’s thrust upon us. It’s the role of being ‘first in line’ for all things child-related – from coordinating family schedules, meal planning, comforting middle-of-the-night wakeups, and more. In a household with two parents, the default parent often carries the heavier load, juggling not just the responsibilities, but also the mental toll that comes with it. Sometimes being the default parent can feel good, like your child running to you for a hug or reassurance. But often the weight of constantly being “the default” can lead to feelings of resentment and exhaustion and oftentimes the default parent is the one who carries more of the mental load😴. In our home for a long time; I felt the mental load and burden of being the “default” parent and it took clear communication with my husband to make things more equitable with our time and resources. If part of a two-parent household, it’s important to have open communication and discuss ways to ensure equitable distribution of tasks. This can help alleviate the strain on the default parent and foster a more balanced partnership. Acknowledging each other’s efforts and strengths is key to creating a supportive and nurturing environment for both parents and children alike. 🌟On my Podcast (The PedsDocTalk Podcast), I discuss the Default Parent Dilemma and how to shift dynamics with Erica Djossa of @momwell. Comment or DM me “PODCAST LINK” for the latest PDT podcast episode.🌟 Do you identify as the default parent? How do you know you are the default parent? Have you found anything particularly helpful to alleviate feelings of resentment or exhaustion?? Comment below!

Are you the “default parent” in your family? The default parent is the one who’s often the go-to person to take on tasks related to household management, emotional care, and managing the kids’ lives and schedules. To find out if you’re the default parent (or to help your partner understand all of the work that comes along with being the default parent!), ask yourself these 5 questions… 1️⃣ Do I know whether we’re low on diapers/formula/juice/etc.? 2️⃣ Do I update the kids’ wardrobe when they size up or the seasons change? 3️⃣ Do I assume I’ll be part of handling last-minute kid related stuff, like getting up with them at night or making same-day pediatrician appointments when they’re sick? 4️⃣ If I want time for myself, do I first have to make arrangements (meals, child care, etc.) for the kids? 5️⃣ Do the kids come to me first when they need help with something? If you answered “yes” to most or all of these Qs, you might be the default parent. If you answered “no” to most or all of these questions, don’t worry! There are ways you can help bring balance to your parenting partnership. 👉 For example, you can start by thinking about the things that seem to happen automatically around your home—soap dispensers always refilled, folded laundry appearing in drawers, diapers always stocked in the right size. 👉 Ask which tasks would be helpful to take off the default parent's plate. 👉 Then make a *concrete* plan for taking care of it going forward. Run your plan by them (“You mentioned that packing lunch for the kids is rough in the morning. I plan to take that off your plate by packing lunches before I leave for work, and adding any lunch items we get low on to the shopping list. Does that work for you?”), and then do it! Do you have any other tips for balancing your parenting responsibilities? Share them in the comments! 💬 ––– #parentstogether #defaultparent #parenting #momlife #dadlife #parentinglife #stayathomemom #stayathomedad #householdchores #emotionallabor #genderequity

↓ Drowning under the mental load? ↓ For a long time, I thought the problem was that I was carrying too much. Too much planning, remembering, anticipating what everyone needed. I knew the language for it - mental load, default parent, emotional labour. Talking about it helped - briefly. But I couldn’t understand why the issue kept coming back. We’d have a conversation. Things would improve for a bit. And then, gradually, I’d end up back in the same role: organiser / manager / one holding it all together. Here’s what I didn’t see at the time: The mental load isn’t just about who does what. It’s about who *feels responsible*. And I’d been shaped - by motherhood, relationships, and years of conditioning - to take responsibility first. So even when things were more “equal” on paper, I was still carrying it *internally*. And no single conversation fixes that. What actually changed things for me wasn’t asking more clearly or explaining it better. It was changing my relationship with *myself*. Noticing when I was over-functioning. Letting something drop - even when it felt uncomfortable. Resisting the urge to manage, remind, or rescue. That’s the part people don’t really talk about. Because it’s not just practical - it’s emotional, and brings up guilt, fear, and old beliefs about being a “good” mum or partner. But that’s also why it sticks. Because when you change how you relate to responsibility, the dynamic has to adjust around you. If you’ve named the mental load, talked about it, tried to share it - and still feel like the default parent… You’re not doing it wrong. You’re being invited to go deeper. There’s a warning light on. And paying attention to it can change far more than who does the laundry. Because the real change doesn’t start with managing the household differently. It starts with taking yourself seriously again. The forgetting is the luxury… 😵‍💫 The default parent never gets to forget. Not the appointments, the snacks, the spirit days, the diapers running low, the birthday gifts, the school emails, the mental math happening 24/7. Even when we sit down. Even when we “rest.” Even when we’re technically off the clock. It’s not that we’re controlling. It’s that if we don’t remember it… it doesn’t happen. If this made you feel seen, you’re not dramatic or doing too much. You’re carrying invisible work that rarely gets acknowledged 🤍 Follow @kee_to_wellness for honest motherhood, mental load conversations, and real-life working mom stuff. #mentalload #defaultparent #workingmomlife #motherhoodreal #momlife Alt keywords: default parent mental load, invisible labor motherhood, working mom burnout, emotional labor parenting, overwhelmed mom
