Here are 2 essential and foundational techniques to add to your toolkit: 1️⃣ Open-Ended questioning. Ask questions that encourage the other person to elaborate and provide more details. These can further enrich the conversation and provide insight into the speaker’s perspective. Examples: “Tell me more about that...” “What do you mean by that?” “Can you share an example of that?” “What do you think about…?” 2️⃣ Reflection Restate what the other person has said in your own words, and check you’ve understood their message correctly. Examples: “I hear you saying [_____]. Is that the case?” “It sounds like [_____]. Is that right?” “So, you feel [_____]. Did I understand correctly?” “The thing you want the most is [_____]. Is that right?” By incorporating these techniques into your conversations, you can demonstrate your interest in the other person’s perspective and build stronger relationships based on mutual understanding.
