MADeity work is an important part of the craft for many witches and pagans (and not at all for many others).
Though it is a topic that receives a lot of attention in online witchcraft and pagan spaces, it is also one that can feel very confusing and overwhelming for new practitioners.
Below are three things I believe are important to keep in mind when working with or venerating deities (or other spirits, for that matter) based on my own experiences:
1. Building a relationship with a deity is not scary or “advanced.” In fact, it is one of the best ways to feel safe and supported in your magical and spiritual practices. There is very little “risk” in acts such as lighting a candle on your altar, giving an offering, and calling out to a deity who you feel drawn towards.
2. Like all types of relationships, the strongest and most fulfilling deity relationships are the ones in which both beings choose each other. While you can certainly attempt to reach out to any deity you feel drawn to, there is no guarantee that they will always respond in the way you want — and likewise, you are not obligated to worship or work with every deity that you believe may be sending you a sign.
3. On that note, signs are entirely subjective to each individual. What feels like a deeply meaningful sign to me may sound entirely mundane when I describe it to another person, who lacks the context of my beliefs and lived experiences. For this reason, I caution practitioners against seeking validation from external sources. In most cases, YOU are the best person to validate YOUR experiences.
