His role works because it mirrors earlier Stranger Things arcs: a kid who seems awful on the surface but is ultimately just scared, confused, and out of his depth when real horror arrives. Derek isn’t positioned as a hero, but as a reminder that the Upside Down doesn’t discriminate — it comes for ordinary, annoying, flawed people too — which makes him one of Season 5’s more grounded and unsettling additions.
