As I heard this question, I started crying. There was no evident loss, nothing big like the death of a parent or a friend, nothing that felt like a tsunami that devasted my world, at least nothing in the recent past. But this question opened the door for me to touch all the ungrieved grief that has been dormant in my mind. I was flooded with deep sadness, another aspect of grief, the loss of all the experiences that I won't ever have again, for all the laughs I shared with loved ones that I won't ever experience again, for my younger innocence, the smiles exchanged with strangers on the street, the list goes on. To live is to be in a constant state of grief. I love this quote from David Kessler he says, "maturity is when you accept the fact that two contradictory ideas can exist together," and the two contradicting truths that he speaks about, I believe are encompassed in this quote from Mark Nepo "Everything is beautiful and I am so sad" Say it with me, "everything is beautiful and I'm so sad." I pray that you live fully and grieve deeply in such an audacious way that you honor the dead and the loss of all that is gone while having reverence for the breath that you still have right now.
